Henry Griffith of Newport.

In the name of God Amen I Henry Griffith of Newport in the County of Monmouth inkeeper being sick of body but of perfect memory praised be God doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner & forme following that is to say, First I comend my soule to the hands of Almighty God my onely creator fervently hoaping through the pretious death & passion of my redeemer Jesus Christ to have remission for all my sins both originall & actuall, & my body to be buried in Christian buriall at the discression of my executors hereafter to be named. Item I give & bequeath one chattell lease granted to me from the Hono’ble the Lady Mary Thomas of Ruperry of one messuage or decayed tenement & garden in Newport unto my deare & loving wife for & during the terme of her naturall life, & from & after her decease I give & devise the same p’misses together with the said indenture of lease unto my son James Griffith for & during the terme & time then to come & unexpired of the said demise. Item I give & bequeath unto my said loving wife all and singular my goods cattle & chattle of what degree soever together with my houshold stuffe & utensills of house unto my said wife for & during the terme of her naturall life (except one bed & its furniture which my said son James Griffith now useth, wth bed & furniture I doe hereby bequeath unto my said son). Item my will is that if my said wife shall fall into poverty that then it shall & may be lawfull for her to sill & dispose of any of the said goods chattells & houshold stuffe for her nesessary reliefe, but if my said wife does intend to dispose of any of ye said goods wth intent to alter change or defeate this my last will & true meaning thereof then my will is that all such sales shall be void frustrate & of none efect any thing heerin contained to the contrary thereof not withstanding. Item unto my daughter Joan Morne five shillings to be paid her by my executors within six months after my decease. Item my will is that my said son James Griffith shall aide assist & support my said wife as far as in lyeth in all things during her naturall life if he chances to survive my said wife. Item I nominate & appoint my said wife & son to be joint executors of this my will & testament. In witnesse whereof I have hereunto put my hand & seale the six and twentieth day of August in the yeare of the reigne of our sovereigne Lord Charles the second by the grace of God of England Scotland France & Ireland King defender of ye faith &c the six & thirtieth Annog Dni 1684
