Our Schools

The public school system of Missouri is unsurpassed by that of any other State. The Legislature appropriates one third of the State revenues to the support of the common schools, and add to this the interest on our permanent school fund of $12,500,000, and we have the largest cash school fund of any State in the Union.

We have nearly 11,000 school houses, valued at over $17,000,000, and an enrollment of three quarters of a million of pupils and 15,000 teachers, who receive an average salary Of $45 per mouth.

Our three State normal schools, located at Kirksville, Warrensburg and Cape Girardeau, have an average attendance of about 700 students each, are in a flourishing condition, and furnish the State a supply of well equipped teachers.

In addition to these we have many private colleges, normals, seminaries, military academies and musical conservatories well distributed over the State, and all doing most excellent work.

As an institution of higher education the State University is the pride of Missourians and destined to become the leading educational institution in the Mississippi Valley.

With its departments of Law, Medicine, Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, Normal, Academic and Military, an able and well trained corps of professors ; nearly a million dollars worth of buildings, all thoroughly furnished and equipped, and abundant revenues for sustenance, it can and will do a great work for the young men of the Mississippi Valley and make large contributions to the intelligence and enlightenment of our citizenship.
