Time Line of Person County, North Carolina

Morton Families

As my research has carried me past census records, I am now trying to investigate court records and land deeds for the various Morton families in my line. I have compiled a rough time line that lists what I have found to this date. Below are the results of the research.

1776 – 1793

1792 - Thomas Morton of Prince Edward County, Virginia purchases land from William Chambers of Person County. The purchase price was twenty pounds, Virginia Currency and the tract of land was located on the waters of the Marlow Creek. It mentions Harralson’s line. Could this be Hiram Harrelson who married Averiller Morton in 1799 ? James Dickson, William Morton, and John Carlton were the jurats. It is recorded in Deed book A, page 147. I believe this Thomas Morton was the one who married Elizabeth Donaldson, and with William Morton signing as witness, could William be a brother?

1793 - Robert Donaldson – appears on Person County Tax List

Moses and Buckley Walker also appear –

Noted here is that Elizabeth Donaldson, daughter of Robert Donaldson and Martha Walker married Thomas Morton, 1799, son of Thomas and Cicily Katherine Morton. Thomas Morton purchased land in 1792 the year before his marriage.

Also duly noted is the absence of any Morton/Motton in any districts of Person County during this time frame.

1794 - William Morton, Wm. Morton, Robert Donaldson, Moses Walker all on Tax List

1799 - Thomas Morton marries Elizabeth Donaldson 1-5-1799, Ezekil Harrelson was the bondsman.

Averiller Morton married Hiram Harrelson 8-24-1799, William Morton was the bondsman

1800 - Thomas, William, George, and Catherine appear in Census

Note: Harry O. Alvis believes that Catherine to be the mother with Tarleton and Joseph still living with her. I have to wonder if this is the same Catherine as Cicily Katherine Morton.
