Notes for FRANKLIN EDWARD
CLARK:
As per conversation with Cora Leonard, his granddaughter on 9/9/99:
Edward Franklin Clark went AWOL from the Civil War because he was angry that
they would not put him in his brother Wes' company. ( I cannot
find a brother named Wes Clark so this statement may not be accurate)
They came to the house to get him and he hid in the chimney. He escaped down a
rope and hid in an open grave in a nearby cemetery. He told her that the
soldiers who came for him were cursing as they passed by the grave because they
couldn't find him. He had four brothers killed in the Civil War.
Also, she told us that there used to be a neighbor woman they called Aunt Sudie
and that when she came to visit they always had to wait on her hand and foot. He
was told to go and get her a cold drink of water and to be sure to get it from
the bottom so that it would be cold and he peed in it on the way back. Another
time they told him to get her pipe and put tobacco in it and he filled it with
gun powder. It blew up and blackened her face and although he got in trouble,
they all had a good laugh. These were stories told to her by her mother and
grandparents as a child.

James Chandler Morton, aged 44 years, died this morning at 11:55 o'clock at his home, No. 1127 Twenty Second Street. Mr. Morton has been seemingly well, having gone to his work this morning but returned to his home about 8 o'clock complaining of pains in is chest. Shortly before his death he went to the porch for water and died suddenly. Mr Morton was formerly a resident of Aberdeen N.C. having moved to Columbus last February. Besides his wife, he is survived by one; son, Allious Morton, father, George Morton of Holly Springs, N.C., three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Vickers of Durham, N.C., Mrs. Nannie Walker of Apex, N.C., Mrs. Ella Harris of Woodsdale, N.C.; three brothers, Grover Morton of Durham, N.C., Ed Morton of Memus, N.C., and Geo. Morton of Woodsdale, N.C.
He was a consistent member of the Methodist church of Bemia, N.C. Funeral arrangements will not be completed until arrival of the family from North Carolina.

Note: His son's name was James Aleus Morton, spelling here is incorrect. The Woodsdale NC is Woodsdale Township of Person County, NC. There is no Bemia NC so I assume that it means Bemis, Tennessee. Where it states "Ed Morton of Memus, NC" , it should be Bemis, Tennessee. His other son, my grandfather, William Melvin Morton "Jack" was not listed here. The remains of Jas. C. Morton, who died suddenly at his home, 1127 Twenty second street Tuesday noon were shipped on the Seminole this morning to Jackson, Tenn. Accompanying the remains were the widow and son of the deceased and a brother, E.M. Morton and wife of Jackson Tenn. who arrived in the city last night. The funeral services and interment will be held in Jackson tomorrow afternoon.
