Notes for JOSEPH HARRISON, JR:
Notes from Bob Moretz
Source: Email dated
Oct. 6, 2000 from him to me. JWH
He married (Joseph Jr)
Drucilla Bentley. Drucilla was born in Bear Creek, Rowan Co NC 1772. Drucilla
was the daughter of Benjamin Bentley Sr and Jane unknown. Drucilla died 1865 at
93 years of age.
Joseph Harrison
(1758-1860) married Drucilla Bentley about 1790. She was born 1772 on Bear
Creek in Rowan County (now Davie County NC). She was the daughter of Benjamin
Bentley. Mothers name Jane unknown.
Benjamin sold out on Bear Creek and in 1784 moved to the Head Waters of
the South Yadkin River in Iredell County (now Alexander County) near Cedar Knob
and Black Oak
Ridge which is about 12 miles north east of the present town of
Taylorsville. It was here that Joseph Harrison married Drucilla. They continued
to live in this section for some thirty years.
In the mid 1820's the
entire family Joseph, Drucilla and their children, including married sons,
moved to the Richlands on the Headwaters of the Main Yadkin River in Wilkes
County (Now Caldwell).
Joseph Harrison was
very active in what is now Yadkin Baptist Church.
He died at the
age of 92 in Caldwell County in December 1860. The 1860 Mortality Schedule shows that
he died of Palsey after an illness of 18 days.
Further investigation
of Rowan County records indicates that Joseph Harrison Sr was in fact a Jr.
Rowan County Court Records show Joseph Harrison as a member of the jury January
16, 1769 as well as witnessing a number of other documents during this time period.
A deed dated December 28, 1787 from Joseph Harrison Sr. to Joseph Harrison Jr.
is recorded in the Rowan County Registry Book 367 pages 8 & 9. This being
for 300 acres at the main corner of the South Yadkin River and being originally granted to Arch Wasson Thence to Jos Harrison Sr.
These same records
indicate the presence of William, John and Benjamin Harrison.
