Court of Pleas & Quarter Session
Person County
March Term 1853
To The Worshipful Justices of said
Court The petition of Green D. Satterfield & Hosea Carver Advises on the estate
of John Morton dec'd
Respectfully showeth unto your
Worships That John Morton late of the County and State aforesaid dies intestate
some time during the present year and that your petitioners having been
appointed administrators in the estate of said dec'd were duly qualified as such
at the present tern of said Court.
Your petitioners further show your
Worships, that the personal estate of the dec'd has been sold in the manner
prescribed by law and that the money realizes forever paid sale amounting to
about one hundred and eighty dollars has been found insufficient to satisfy the
just claims against said estate & that it will be necessary to sell his real
estate consisting of about one hundred and fifteen acres owned by him and his
brother Lewis Morton as tenants in common, he having an undivided surety in said
tract of land, said laws being of the property value of two hundred dollars that
the defendant ^(estate) is indebted to Green Satterfield to the
amount of ^ (about) one hundred and forty dollars
To Hosea Carver to the amount of
about sixty dollars and the defendant ^ (estate) owes other
debts, to the probable amount of $300 that the proceeds arising from the sale of
both real and personal estates will be inadequate to the payment of this debt of
the said intestate.

said deceased left three infant children, by the name, Susan, Martha, & Mary and
that Charles Mason has been appointed by the Court the guardian pendente(?) lite

Note: this document was very faded out and
extremely hard to read. please forgive the errors.
Note: This estate record establishes that John
M. Morton and Lewis Morton were brothers. I believe that this is the John Morton
who married Leah Carver in Person County on 11/30/1843. It seems evident that
Leah has already passed away as it mentions three infant children, and they are
put into custody of Charles Mason the county clerk. I also believe that Lewis
married Rosilla Obriant (11/18/1841) and there are found in the 1850 census of
Person county as follows:
Lewis Morton 36 Farmer
Rosilla

John M
