Notes for CHARLES MCDUFF
"CHARLIE" WILSON:
Notes from Carl Lawson, 9/12/2003
"The reason I believe Charles, the son of Charles and Laura A.
(Smith) Wilson, middle name if McDuff is because of the following:
McDuff C. Wilson is enumerated with Laura Wilson in the 1880 census, Township
12, Range 9, Walker County, Alabama Census. His age is given as 15 years and
born in Alabama. All other times in the censuses his name was given as Charles,
Charlie, or Charley except in 1910 when it was given as Charlie M. This seems to
be a family name used by the Wilson families.
Second source: Wilson, Charles M., pvt. K. en. 12-21-63, Camp
Davies, 3 yrs., MI 12-28-63, Camp Davies, B. Marshall Co., Ala., 29, farmer, d.
2-19-64
From this information above I believe that Laura's husband was probably Charles
McDuff Sr., and his son Charles McDuff, Jr. but only guessing."
" I also found a William W. Wilson in Walker County. He was of
interest since he and his son, George W. Wilson served in Company M, First
Alabama Cavalry USA. It is also interesting that in Bruce Myers notes for the
1860 Walker County, Alabama census he indicated that William W. Wilson had a son
named Charlie McDuff Wilson. William W. Wilson in the 1860 census was 35 years
old and born in Georgia. George W. Wilson was 14 and Charles McDuff was 12. Both
of William's children were born in Alabama. lGood chance this family is related
to Charles McDuff Wilson, Sr.?"

Notes for HENRY GRADY WILSON:
I know very little about my dad’s family. He never told us any
stories about his family or ever seemed to want us to know. What my
brother and I learned about them came from visits we made to Alabama
when we were children and when my brother and I lived with him from
1970 until about 1973. I can remember as a child, I loved to sit on
Paw and Maw Wilson's porch at night and listen to Paw and dad’s
brother Bill tell about things that happened long ago. I loved the
funny stories of Paws brothers and about Dad and his siblings
growing up. Those times were too few and I wish I could remember
more about the family members they talked about on those rare
occasions. One of my fondest memories is of Brenda Lois, Magdalene’s
daughter. She was such a beautiful person and she was so much fun to
be around. She always had this knack of making you feel loved when
she was around.
Maw Wilson came to visit my dad once when we moved back to North
Carolina in 1973. She came to visit about three or four years after
that and stayed about two weeks. It was wonderful. She was the one
who always wrote letters and would keep me posted on the happenings
in Alabama. I used to love writing to her and waiting for a reply
because her letters were always three or more pages of news. Again
she would talk about her family and childhood to us but I just can't
remember and I truly wish I had just written down in a journal those
stories. She talked about her mother and how they used to live in
Winston County, Alabama. I have one picture of my grandmother and
her mother and it is so faded. They were very lovely women and you
could also see the Indian heritage in their faces. My Aunt Maggie
favored Maw Wilson a lot. She also was so very beautiful and the
thing I remember most about her was that when she lived next to Paw
and Maw in Nauvoo. We were down on a visit from home and we stayed
overnight with them. I loved playing with Sandra my cousin and we
drove Betty and Brenda her sisters nuts because we were "so sweet
and good"!!! I remember hearing Betty telling Brenda she'd be glad
when I went home because I was a brat. I loved being a brat and had
never really thought about it until then but I don't think I stopped
being obnoxious that summer. Sandra and I were the same age and we
did love to play and get into trouble. I remember as we got older
that she seemed calmer than I.
Dad was also a hard man to figure out. He ruled with the theory that
he was the head of the house and we did not ask questions. We just
did as he said. That bratty kid in me always got me into trouble
with him and I remember lots of differences of opinions growing up.
I loved him but feared him in the same way. Unlike mom, we didn't
get second chances with him. I learned early on the just stay out of
his way and do my chores and that seemed to keep me on his better
side. I wish I could say we had a wonderful father daughter
relationship, but we didn't. He just never seemed to be there when
we were growing up. He was always gone or working or doing whatever
it was he did.
My desire to know about my family history has brought me here,
trying to piece together the family of my dad, which he never talked
about a lot. I do believe it is important to know where we came from
and I wish he had told us more about his family. Maybe he didn't
know, so it is left to me to find out. So far it has been an
interesting journey and my Uncle Bill has helped quite a bit. I
thank Earl Lawson who has helped me piece together this much so far.
So, I hope I can find more to finish out this side of my family to
make it complete. JWH 6/2004
