Descendants of Richard McClurkin

RICHARD McCLURKIN (or McLURKEN) was born c 1750 in IRELAND; County Antrim; Ballymena, and died Bef. 1784 in South Carolina.  He is believed to have married JANE DUNWOODY c 1774 in South Carolina.  She was born c 1755, and died 1822 in Alabama; Jefferson Co. (Source: Will, dated 5 Dec 1821, probated 25 May 1822. Will Bk, pg 29, quoted in Alabama Records, Vol 18, Jefferson County, Compiled by Pauline Jones Gandrud.).

Notes for RICHARD McCLURKIN:
James McClurkin may have been Elizabeth McClurkin's father, and the husband of Jane Dunwoody. However, see the following, posted to the McClurkin Genform by Butch Sanders 2 May 2002::

It is true that Lois C. Myer in her early work suggested that James McClurkin Jr. married Jane Dunwoody. However, in what would seem to be a later work, she states that Jane Dunwoody married Richard McClurkin by whom she had the 5 daughters (that migrated from Rutherford Co., NC to Jefferson Co., AL. LDS Reference is:

"Descendants of Richard McClurkin and Jane Dunwoody of Ireland through the Lindsey and Waldrop lines - FHL BRITISH Film [ 547596 ] compiled by Lois Myer."

As far as I know, no one has even a guess as to the wife and offspring of James Jr.

Evidence cited in support of Richard McClurkin/Jane Dunwoody union is based on property transactions. In 1773 Richard and wife received 150 acre grant on Jamey's Creek just east of present day Woodruff (and what is now called Jimmy's Creek). In 1785, Jane McClurkin received property in her own name in what seems to be the same location. Then in 1799 she sold some of same property. Here's a summary of these key transactions and others:

5 Feb 1773
Richard McClurkin was granted 150 acres of land in Spartanburg Co. Jameys Creek, waters of Tyger River, bounded by Charles Denem, Isaac Crow; survey 5 Feb. 1773"

2 May 1785
Grant by Gov William Moultrie to Jane McClurkin.

19 Nov 1799
Jane McClurkin sells 100 acres to Paul Cassleberry for $200. This 100 acres is on Jameys Creek. A 2 May 1785 Grant by Gov William Moultrie to Jane McClurkin. Wit James Allen and Samuel Woodruff signed Jane McClurkin; s mark wit oath 15 Jan 1801 Samuel Woodruff to George Bruton re 22 Jan 1801. When Castleberry sales the same piece of property it is stated that it was part of a grant to Jean Mcclearkin.

?? Apr 1800
Jane McClurkin from Carlton Lindsey, both of Rutherford Co., for 100 pounds: 50 acres on branches of the north fork of White Oak Creek waters of the Green River, bounded by GREEN, patent originally granted to JESHONIAS TABER by Gov. Richard Dobbs in 1795. Witnessed by MARTIN EDWARDS and MICAJEY LINSEY.

28 May 1817
Isaac Crow in his will gives to Sarah Crow the other half of the tract of land whereon he lives, also one tract lying on the Tiger River being the tract he bought from Macajah Lindsey and the heirs of the widow McClurkin. He wants 100 acres taken off the upper end of said tract, land adjacent to Chasneys land and Wm. Posey.

1822 Rutherfod Co., NC
Jane McClurkin to John W. Allen -- 2 deeds.

Probably unrelated to the Richard and Jane issue, we find this 1794 deed for property in same general vacinity:

2 Apr 1794
Thomas McClerkin sells 100 acres to Edward hooker for 20 pds sterling. This 100 acres was part of 1000 acre grant 21 Jul 1775 by Gov William bull to James Sample Jr. James Sample Jr. sold it to Rotry Simple ?. Rotry Simple sold it to John McCullock 6 Dec 1785. John McCullock sold it to Thomas McClerkin. Grant between the Tyger and Enoree River: borders Spencer Bobo, Tod (since sold to John Rainwater) John Stone, Whitaker, Kirnber(?) and McCullock (lease to Edward Hooker) Wit Fielding Foster, Sarah Casey, and John foster. Signed Thomas McClurkin wit oath 9 Jun 1794 Fielding Foster to Thomas Farrow. Rec 11 Nov 1794.

Anybody know who this Thomas McClurkin might be?? Should note that Edward Hooker and wife Millay sell to Thomas Tod for 50 pd sterling the 100 acres he had bought from Thomas McClerkin 3 months earlier for 20 pd sterling. Thus would seem Thomas got robbed.

Came to US on the Brigantine Free Mason in 1772.
Settled in SC. Was with a group of Protestants under the Rev. William Martin who came on 5 ships from Ireland to Charleston SC.

Jan 6, 1773, given warrants for 150 acres - the amount for a man & wife
  - from A Compilation of the Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina, 1763-1773, compiled by Jane Revill C 1968.

Several researchers state that Richard McClurkin was the husband of Jane Dunwoody. They have also stated that they were married in SC. The information from the Revill book indicates that Richard was married when he applied for land, though it may have been to someone else.

However, James McClurkin may have been Jane's husband and Elizabeth's father. There were several McClurkin's on the 5 ships, including (though not limited to): 4 Jameses, 2 Richards, 2 Thomases, 1 Samuel, 1 Mary, 1 Eleanor, 1 Lillias, 1 Jane. This is allowing for the probability that the names McClurkin, McClurken,  M'Lurkam, McLurkam and McLurkan, found in the records, were all really the same name!

 Isaac Crow Spartanburg will 1817
Posted by: Butch Sanders
Date: February 06, 2001 at 11:21:37

I found an old will of Isaac Crow of Spartanburg SC that might be of interest to someone. My interests are Sanders' and McClurkins of early SC. This will is from a book -- title below with will. McClurkin is mentioned but once in the whole book, but the context in which that once occurs sure raises some interesting questions for McClurkin researchers. Anyway the widow McClurkin mentioned in Isaac Crows Spartanburg will below was living next door to a William Crow in 1790 Spartanburg census.

Butch

The book is:

A COLLECTION OF UPPER SOUTH CAROLINA
GENEALOGICAL and FAMILY RECORDS
Volume II

On page 62 and 63 is will of Isaac Crow of Spartanburg Dist., SC. which reads:

Book A Page 114. Probate Judge Office. Spartanburg, SC.
I, Isaac Crow of Spartanburg Dist, being weak in health and body, but of a sound mind and memory. I give to my beloved wife on half of that tract of land that I now live on (lines given) during her natural life, also I give my wife one negro woman named Sarah, to have said for her life time, also one bed and furniture and all her wearing appareal and a large trunk. I give to my dtr Hannah one tract of land lying on Tiger River being the tract I bought from Edward Hooper containing 132 1/2 acres, also one negro by name Bob. I give to my dtr. Hannah son John one tract of land lying on James Creek, being the tract I bought from William Chambler and Thomson Chambler and Isaac Crow the son of James the said land to be left for the executors to manage as they think best for the boys. I give to my son Samuel Crow and his wife Rebeckah Crow his wife and the heirs of her body one negro man named Jack. I give to Samuel Crow one negro girl named Marak. I give to James Crow son of Samuel Crow one negro boy named John. I give to Elizabeth Crow dtr. of Samuel Crow one negro boy named Allin. I give to Samuel Crow Jr. son of Samuel Crow Senr. one negro boy named Lewis. I give to Sarah Crow the other half of the tract of land whereon I now live, also one tract lying on the Tiger River being the tract I bought from Misaja Lindsay and the heirs of the widow McClunkin. I want 100 acres taken off the upper end of said tract, land adj. Chasneys land and Wm. Posey. I give to Samuel Crow son of Isaac Crow Senr. all the tract of land that I give to Benjamin Crow son of Samuel Crow. Any property not bequeath in the foregoing will to be equally divided between the following my wife and legatees Hannah Langston, Samuel Crow, Isaac Crow. I appoint Joseph Barnet, Samuel Woodruff, Esq. executors. Dated 28 May 1817. Wit: Joseph Barnett, Samuel Woodruff Senr., Easter X Shurley. Recorded 22 Oct 1817.

I have little doubt that Misaja Lindsay is Micajah Lindsey and widow McClunkin is widow McClurkin. A William Crow is next door neighbor of Spartanburg widow McClurkin in 1790. And Micajah Lindsey is supposed to have married an Elizabeth McClurkin daughter of a widow McClurkin.

Notes for JANE DUNWOODY:
Acc. to Lois Meyer's notes, "On May 2, 1785, Jane McClurken took land in her own name in Spartanburg County. S.C. She sold this land on Nov. 19, 1799, and moved to Rutherford County, North Carolina."

Lois believed Jane to have been the widow of Richard McClurken, rather than James McClurken, and says
"Richard McClurken granted 150 Acres of land 1/6 1773. Came from Ireland in the Ship "Brigantine Free Mason" in the year 1772. 150 Acres of land means: Himself and wife.
"From State House records at Columbia, S.C. -

Lois gives a sketch of the land, looking somewhat like this:

In the name of God, Amen. I Robert Waldrop, of Jefferson County, State of Alabama, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament, in manner and form following, to wit:
