Notes for THOMAS BENTON LINDSEY:
Served in the Confederate Army. Buried in the Lindsey Cemetery on Highway 25 between Dennis and Belmont. From "A Place Called Belmont" by Jerry Martin.

Note discrepancy: if his father didn't marry Elizabeth English until 1848, and in fact was still married to Polly Davis late enough to have a son by her in 1844, how does this fit with an 1843 birthdate for Thomas? Could we have the wrong mother, or was he actually the son of Elizabeth and a possible first husband, or the illegitimate son of Elizabeth and Bazzle?

Notes for JAMES K POLK LINDSEY:
See notes for Thomas Lindsey, son (supposedly) of Bazzle Lindsey and Elizabeth English. Thomas was born in 1843, the year before this James, although according to our records, Bazzle and Elizabeth were not married until 1848. Most likely one or more of the dates involved are incorrect, and we may have either James or Thomas attributed to the wrong mother.

can get the record from the National Archives (s-l-o-w) or Broadfoot

plus a small copying charge."

Hi John,
Thank you for the birth and death dates and places for Aaron Manship Williams. I don't have any more information on Margaret OVERCAST WILLIAMS, except that she was born abt 1815 in NC...according to the 1850 Tippah Co., MS census. Her sister, Esther OVERCAST, was living with Aaron and Margaret in the 1850 census. This is what I have on their children (Belinda Caroline WILLIAMS LINDSEY was my g.grandmother):
1.Tansey J. b. abt 1835 in AL
2.Thomas W. b. abt 1837 in AL
3.James M. b. abt 1842 in AL
4.Julia A. b. abt 1843 in AL
5.Sarah Ansalane b. 24 Jun 1846 in MS m. John Micajah Lindsey 7 Apr 1869 in MS, d. 8 Feb 1908
6.Belinda Caroline b. 8 May 1849 in Ripley, Tippah Co., MS m. Thomas Carroll Lindsey 24 Dec 1841 in MS d. 28 Sep 1831 in Bardwell, Ellis Co., TX
7.George A. b. abt 1851 in MS
8.E.J. (female) b. abt 1853 in MS, I strongly believe her name was Elizabeth

Most of the above information comes from the 1850 & 1860 census' and from Bible Records.

Thank you again for the dates, any help is greatly appreciated.
Sylvia

Letter:
Mobile, Alabama
July 24, 1910

Mr. B. S. Lindsey
Baltimore, MD

My Dear Nephew:

Yours of the 20th to hand this A.M. Yes, I was suprised, but agreeably so, to get a letter from any of you. I used to correspond with Fred a great deal, but know nothing of the rest of you children since his death. Mary Lee spent one night with us several years ago on her way to New Decatur to visit Jennie, and had her little girl with her and promised to call on her way back and spend several days with us, but failed to do so. Ben I am glad you wrote me and expressed a desire to know more of your people than you do. I am not well enough up on our ancestors to help you very much. Your grandfather Lindsey's name was Holland and [he] was born in South Carolina and moved with his father to middle Tennessee when he was only three years old and then moved to Alabama when he was only a plow boy, and from there moved to Mississippi, and raised his familiy consisting of five boys and three girls. My oldest brother, James, was in the 43rd Mississippi Regiment and was killed at Jonesboro, Georgia on the retreat from Atlanta in June 1864, and brother Lee and George was in the 26th Miss. Regiment and brother Lee was discharged at Bowlinggreen Ky., and George was captured at Fort Donelson and died in Indianpolis, Ind. Brother Tom was with an Arkansas regiment. I have forgotten the number, and he was captured twice, was in prison three months the first time and twenty one months the last time and was released after the surrender and got home in June 1865. Your father and myself enlisted in the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry and served sixteen months, or until the end of the war.

Well, Ben, my wife's name was Sarah Williams and we had eight daughters, namely: Cornelia, Alice, Edna, Sallie, Modenia, Gertrude, Ethel, and Ruby. All are living but Gertrude, the oldest, she married Mr. Greer, the second married Mr. McDonald, 3rd, Mr. Riley, 4th, not married, 5th Mr. Horton, 6th Mr. Riley, 7th Mr. Miller, 8th Mr. Burbank. And we had three boys, the oldest names James Holland, lives in Corinth, the second, Homer Word, was run over by a train in west arkansas and had both legs cut off seven years ago last November and died in the hospital in St. Louis 40 days after the misfortune. Your aunt and I were with him from the time we could get there until he died and brought him home to bury. Walter the youngest son lives here in Mobile since the 6th January last and is collecting for P.F. Collier and Son, New York. He has been working for them 5 1/2 years. And I had the misfortune to lose my wife two years ago last February. And in the fall after her death I took Rheumatism and have not been able to do much work since. Have been down with Walter since the 7th of June. Don't know how long I will be here. Some time perhaps.

Yes, your Uncle Tom is very low and has been for some time. I had a letter from your Aunt Caroline some two weeks ago. And before I left Corinth Sallie had several letters from Y.C.B.L. Hoping that you will find time to write me again. I will ring off for this time with best wishes for you and yours. I'm your devoted uncle.

J.M. Lindsey
(John)

Tombstone placed 1 May 1999. According to an article in the New Albany Gazette, 9 Jun 1999, "The Saltillo area had been home for the Confederate soldier for most of his life. He was born in 1848 and when the war started he was only 13. He joined at the age of 16. According to war records, he served with the 2nd Mississippi Cavalry, Company C and suffered a hernia when thrown from a mule. No other injuries were noted. Lindsey was in Macon, Miss. when the conclusion of the war brought surrender."
