A John Whitaker shows up in the 1830 US Census of Morgan County, Georgia. This may be our John.
Children of this marriage were:
Mary Whitaker (born c1796 in North Carolina, died c1855 in Smith
County Texas, married John T. Hardegree),
Elizabeth Whitaker (born c1798 in North Carolina,
died 20 Aug 1863 in Whitesburg, Carroll County Georgia, married
Joel Culpepper ),
Hudson Whitaker, and
John T. Whitaker.
Children of this marriage were:
Polly A. Garrison (born c1824, died c1882, married Jackson
Garrison),
Nancy C Garrison (born c1825, married William
H Brasher ),
Susan Garrison (born c1826, married Fanning Brown
),
Parthena Garrison (born 3 Nov 1828, died
4 Dec 1902 in Fayette County Alabama, married John W. R. Bailey
),
Louisa Garrison (born 9 Dec 1830 in Georgia,
married [1st] Hudson W. Culpepper and [2nd]
Henry Brasher ),
Miriam Garrison (born 17 Aug 1833, died 13 May
1914 in Whitesburg, Carroll County Georgia, married Joel Adams
Culpepper ),
Adaline Garrison (born c1835, married
Alexander McAllestor ),
John Thompson Garrison (born 21 Jul 1837
in Coweta County Georgia, married Almiranda Brasher ),
Thomas Jefferson Garrison (born 9 Jul 1839,
died 3 Mar 1925 in Fayette County Alabama, married [1st] Elizabeth
Matilda Dobbs and [2nd] Selena C. Berry), and
Howard J Garrison (born 9 Jul 1839).
We have no idea who Richard's wife was, but his documented children
are
Micajah Dean (born c1782, died c1842 in Florida,
married Rhoda Hinson),
Sally Dean (born 1782 in Georgia, died c1845 Laurens
County, Georgia, married Joshua Hightower),
Elijah Dean (born c1784 in Laurens County, Georgia,
died 10 Nov 1858 in Mt. Olive, Dale County, Alabama, married
Martha Page
),
Rebecca Dean (born 1806, married G(regory) D.
Hightower ),
Ranson L. Dean, and
two daughters, one of whom married James Stuby
.
The gap between Elijah and Rebecca (22 years) makes it likely that (1) there were at least two wives, (2) there were two Richard Deans and the second set of children belongs to the other one, (3) Rebecca and Ranson and maybe one or both of the unnamed girls were children of Micajah or Elijah, or (4) we simply have the dates wrong!
One Richard Dean applied for a pension as a Revolutionary soldier from Rutherford County, North Carolilna, having served as a private in the Continental L Line. He was granted an annual allowance of $96, which pension started on 4 Dec 1819. A son, Elijah Dean, with wife Martha Page, were listed in the application, apparently, which would make this our Richard. However, I have only heard about the application, and have not seen an actual copy or certified transcript. In any case, we have no record of this Richard Dean in North Carolina before his service, or in Georgia before about 1784.
Back to indexJohn D. Dillard was born in Fairfield County South Carolina in 1803, and died in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama in 1861. He married Hiley Watson , who was born c1806 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and died 21 Aug 1896 in Center Ridge, Dale County, Alabama. We don't know her father's name, but her mother was Cecelia.
According to my great-aunt Mary (the family historian), John's father was also John. Her notes about John D read: "He moved with his father John to Burke Co., Ga. in 1815. He then moved to Walton Co., Ga. in 1820, then to Muscogee Co., in about 1830. He was living in Walton Co. when Crawford was born. He bought farm land N.E. of Ozark, AL in about 1850. He died in 1861 and is buried on his farm [the family farm in Dale Co. AL]. The John Dillards were landowners in Georgia." John Sr. is believed to have had another son, EdmundDillard, who married Hiley's sister Alvira Watson.
John and Hiley had the following children:
Susan Dillard (born 26 Aug 1827 in Walton County,
Georgia),
Tapley Mixon Dillard (born 20 Dec 1829 in Walton
County, Georgia, married Angeline Briley
),
Crawford George Dillard (born 18 Jun 1832 in Walton
County, Georgia, died 19 Nov 1921 in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama,
married [1st] Mary Ann Briley
and [2nd] Anna Beasley?),
Starling Dillard born 27 Sep 1834 in Walton County,
Georgia, married Gussie Tomlin),
Thomas Dillard (born 2 Feb 1839 in Muscogee County, Georgia, married
Grace ?),
William Tyre Dillard (born 12 Dec 1842 in Muscogee
County, Georgia, died in Texas?, married Emma Martin),
James Elmer Dillard (born 16 Feb 1846 in Muscogee
County, Georgia, married Elizabeth Nabors ),
Sarah Elizabeth Dillard (born 23 Aug 1848 in Muscogee
County, Georgia, married ? Tomlin),
Peter Alexander Dillard (born 8 Sep 1850, married
Margaret Godwin ), and
Jackson Dillard (born 22 Feb 1854, married Sarah (Sallie)Davis
).
Abel Briley was born in North Carolina in 1806 and died 11 May 1881 in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama. We haven't yet found his parents, or even from what North Carolina county he came. Mary Revell was born in North Carolina in 1803, and died 27 Mar 1885 in Ozark.
According to some researchers, Mary's parents were Micajah Revell and Patience Futrell. In the 1840 census of Talbot County Georgia, Abel and Mary were living near both a Micajah Revell and a Matthew Revell. In the 1857 tax list of Cusetta, Georgia, they were listed near Matthew Revel, Sanders Revel and William Briley .
The evidence for Micajah and Patience Revell being Mary's parents is Patience's will, which mentions the children of her daughter, Mary Briley. However, our Mary was still alive at the time, which makes the identification somewhat questionable.
Abel and Mary show up in the 1840 Census of Talbot County, Georgia, and the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Censuses of Dale County, Alabama.
Children born to this marriage were:
Martha Ann Briley (born c1825, married Matthew King),
Sarah Ann Briley (born c1827, married William Stephens ),
Elizabeth Briley (born c1830, married [1st?] William Hill
, and [2nd?] ? Scott),
Micajah Briley (born c1832 (or 1837?), d 1862 of disease in Civil
War - 15th Alabama Infantry, married Mary Elizabeth Phillips),
William L/H Briley (born c1835 in Georgia, married
? Spivey ),
Mary Ann Briley (born 15 Aug 1835 in Muscogee County Georgia, died
12 Jul 1914 in Ozark, Dale County Alabama, married
Crawford George Dillard
),
Angeline Briley (born 1 Nov 1839 in Georgia, died 21 Mar 1907 in
Dillard Station, Dale County, Alabama, married Tapley
Mixon Dillard
).
