My Lost Ancestors, page 4

Henry WATKINS Sr.; Henry WATKINS, Jr. and Katherine PRIDE; Edward WATKINS; Thomas WATKINS; Christopher C WATKINS and Jane THOMAS; James WATKINS

I've grouped all of these together since we've been told the ones from Henry Sr. through Christopher were the ancestors of James Watkins , who married Phoebe DeJarnette, a descendent of Jean de Jarnat .

What we have is sparse and not documented, so please let me know if you have any information that would prove or disprove anything here!

Henry Watkins Sr. is said to have been born 1585 in Wales. He is believed to be the father of

Henry Watkins Jr., born about 1637 in Malvern Hills, Henrico County, Virginia, married Katherine Pride, born about 1642. Henry and Katherine are believed to be the parents of

Edward Watkins, born about 1670 and died in Henrico County, Virginia. He is believed to be the father of

Thomas Watkins, born about 1700 in Virginia, died in Henrico County. Thomas is believed to be the father of

Christopher C Watkins, who was born about 1732, probably in Henrico County, Virginia, and died 6 November 1822 in Anson County, North Carolina. Christopher's wife Jane Thomas died in July 1817 in Anson County. However, according to David Watkins Hill, in an article, "Robert Calvin Watkins," on p. 347 of Anson County Heritage North Carolina 1995, "Christopher Watkins was in Anson County by 1771; prolonged research has failed to confirm family legends of his origin."

Finally, James Watkins, son of Christopher and Jane, was born 1758 in Anson County, North Carolina and died in 1840, also in Anson County, probably in or near Wadesboro, Anson County North Carolina..

James Isom/Isham PATTERSON and Margaret (Peggy) BROWN

James Patterson was born about 1795, perhaps in Ireland, perhaps in South Carolina. His wife, Margaret Brown and Mary Brown below, are said to be the daughters of William Brown of South Carolina.

In 1822, in Newberry District, South Carolina, an Isham Patterson bought a calf at an estate sale. In 1834 an "Isaom" Patterson bought chairs at an estate sale in Newberry.

A family legend says that Isom Patterson and Peggy Brown met on board a ship from Ireland, had a shipboard romance, and married. Could it have been Isom's or Peggy's parents, and the story is off by a generation?

Other stories, current in various branches of the family, are that the family originally settled in the area of Fayetteville, North Carolina, that James/Isom had brothers names George and William and a half brother named David Pinkston, and "legend has it that Isom later moved to the Columbia, South Carolina area and was involved in the Creek Indian battles."

An 1829 census of Laurens District, South Carolina, shows an Isom Patterson with 9 persons in the household.

Children of this marriage were:
Andrew Jackson Patterson (born 11 Dec 1816 in Newberry South Carolina, died 7 October 1886 in Alexander City, Tallapoosa County, Alabama, married Mary Ann Neighbors ),

Samuel BERRY, Humphrey BERRY and Ann LOVEJOY, John BERRY and Martha COLLIER

These are believed to be the ancestors of William Berry of Fayette County, Alabama, who married Sarah Nelson .

Samuel Berry is said to have been born in Charles County, Maryland, and died there in 1753.

Humphrey Berry is said to have had two wives. The first was Mary Smallwood, and the second Ann Lovejoy, the mother of John Berry, born about 1752.

According to probate records, John Berry died about 1804 in Jackson County, Georgia, and his widow, Martha Berry , married a Mr. Green shortly thereafter. The children, Joshua Berry , Robert Berry, Elizabeth Berry, Mary Berry and William Berry (who was an infant of just a few months) were "bound out" to various families, rather than living with their mother and her new husband. Some of the placements were successful, others not, according to records of the Orphans Court.

We have no documentation for anything before the death of John and the disposition of the children, so again, any proof or disproof of what we think we know would be most welcome!
