Micajah C LINDSEY and Elizabeth McCLURKEN/McLURKIN

Micajah Lindsey is thought to be a son of James Lindsey (or James William Lindsey) and brother to Carlton Lindsey. He married Elizabeth McClurken/McLurkin (various spellings in records). Going by the ages listed in census records and his tombstone inscription, we estimate that Micajah was born about 1775, in North Carolina. Records for James Lindsey put him in Surry Co., North Carolina, at that time, so we believe Micajah was born there. He died in Dennis, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, in 1845.

The earliest records we have on Micajah are from Rutherford Co. NC and Spartanburg Co. SC:

In 1793, James William Lindsey of Rutherford Co. NC sold 75 acres of land on Lick Creek to James Lindsey of Spartanburgh Co. SC. The land had been granted to James William Lindsey 1 March 1792 by Gov. Charles Pinckney.

In 1797, James Lindsey of Spartanburgh sold 175 acres of land on Lick Creek to Micajah Lindsey for 10 pounds sterling. 75 acres of this land is identified in the deed as being the land granted to James William Lindsey in 1792. The small purchase price suggests a family relationship, but of course doesn't prove that James was Micajah's father.

In the 1800 Federal Census of Rutherford Co., we find Micajah Lindsey with 1 male 0-9, 1 male 16-25, 1 female 0-9 and 1 female 16-25.

In 1816, Micajah Lindsey, now of Monroe County, Mississippi Territory, sold 65 acres on the northwest side of Bethel Meeting House Branch of the Enoree River. NOTE: Monroe County at that time included much of what is now Alabama, which was not yet a separate territory.

Also in 1816, a census of the Monroe County Heads of Families lists "Micaja Lindsey" with 1 male and 1 female over 21, 5 boys and 2 girls under 21.

In 1817, the will of Isaac Crow mentions "Micajah Lindsey and the rest of the heirs of the Widow McClurken."

Elizabeth McLurkin Lindsey's mother, Jane McLurkin , and sisters settled in the area of Birmingham, Alabama. It is possible that Micajah and Elizabeth also spent some time there, although we have found no indication that they owned land in the area. The sisters were Nancy McLurkin (married Robert Waldrop ), Vesta McLurkin(married Isaac Barger ), Hester McLurkin (married Zachariah Waldrop ) and Jane McLurkin (never married).

What we do know for sure is that by 1837 they were in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, and that Micajah bought many sections of land through the Government Land Office in Pontotoc.

Micajah's and Elizabeth's children were James Owen Lindsey (married Rachel Franklin), Jane Lindsey (married Matthew Davis ), Bazzle Lee Lindsey (married Mary Davis , then Elizabeth English), Holland Lindsey (married Sarah Davis ), Mary Lindsey (married David Franklin ), William Carroll Lindsey (married Martha Bullen ) and Elizabeth Lindsey (married John Joel).

For further information on the descendants of Micajah and Elizabeth, see Descendants of Micajah C Lindsey .

Elizabeth McLurkin, born in 1776, according to her tombstone, was a daughter of Jane and either Richard McLurkin or James McLurkin . We believe Jane's maiden name was Dunwoody, and that both Richard and James were passengers on the Lord Dunluce out of Larne, County Antrim, Ireland in 1772. This ship was one of the "5 Ships" of immigrants led by Rev. William Martin. (See Jean Stephenson's book, Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772 .") James McLurkin was granted land in Chester County, South Carolina. Richard bought land in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, rather than receiving a grant. The "Widow McLurkin" referred to in Isaac Crow's will (see Micajah Lindsey, above), was in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and sold land there in 1799. Elizabeth died in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, in 1847.

For further information on the McClurkins, see Richard McClurkin and Jane Dunwoody .

Matthew DAVIS and Elizabeth MABRY (or Maybury?), son John DAVIS and Mary HAWKINS

Matthew Davis may have been born in Halifax District, North Carolina around 1736. Accrding to a history of Fayette County, Alabama, he was a private in the North Carolina Line in the American Revolution, and a reference to the settlements of his claims for services rendered by the Commissioners of Halifax, in 1784-85 is recorded in the NC State records, Vol. 17, p.204.

He apparently died sometime between 1786 and 1790 in Halifax District, North Carolina.

Elizabeth Mabry was born about 1740 and died about 2785, probably in the Halifax District of North Carolina. We have very little information on these two, none of it proven.

Children of Matthew and Elizabeth are said to have been Matthew Davis (born c1765 in Warren County, North Carolina), Martha Jane Davis, James Davis, William Davis , Thomas Davis, and John Davis .
