8. Francis Joseph⁴ Moellinger. Francis is believed to have been born circa 1831 in Wettolsheim, France⁶² and christened Francois Joseph Moellinger. He married Rosina (--?--). Francis died on 3 Apr 1873 in Sedalia, Pettis Co., Missouri.^63,64,65 . His funeral notice read: "The funeral of Francis Joseph Moellinger will take place from his late residence on Fourth street, near the Ohio Street Methodist Church, at 3 o'clock p.m., April 4, 1873. Friends of the family are invited to attend."

The "Joseph Moellinger" listed in the Alsace Emigration Index, Book L-P France, 1817-1866, Film No. 1125004, at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, is believed to be "Francis Joseph Moellinger." The index states he applied for his passport on 30 June 1854 at age 23 and that his occupation was a Brasseur (translation: brewer) His residence was Wellolsheim [Wettolsheim] and his destination was New York.

In the 1860 U.S. census for Syracuse, Morgan Co., Missouri, a Jos Moellinger is listed, living in a hotel. For the following reasons, I believe he is Francis Joseph Moellinger (my great-grandfather). a. He is shown as being 25. However, since this Joseph is living in a hotel, the information may have been given as a "best guess" by the desk clerk or manager. b. The occupation of Joseph Moellinger is shown as Bar Tender. In the 1870 U.S. Census, Joseph is listed as being a Barkeeper. c. In the 1860 and 1870 U.S. censuses, both Joseph Moellingers are shown as having been born in France. d. The "1860 Joseph Moellinger" is living in Morgan County, Missouri which is next to Pettis County where the "1870 Joseph Moellinger" was living.

Prudence (Howe) Arnold's death record in the Book of Deaths, Vol A, Cass Co., Michigan, Record #44 states that she was the daughter of Frederick Howe. She may have been born in Truxton, Cortland Co., New York where her future husband, Abram Arnold resided. There is a Frederick Howe living in Truxton in the 1825 New York State Census. He is listed as having three unmarried females under 16 in the household. Prudence would have been approximately 8 in the 1825 census. Prudence may, however, be the daughter of one of Frederick's brothers.

The Cass Co. Book of Deaths also shows that Prudence Arnold died 29 May 1874. However, her husband Abram states in several documents found in his pension file that she died 26 Apr 1874. Her gravestone reads April 28, 1874. The timing of her death is corroborated by a statement in a letter from Mollie Edmiston to Delia Brown on 6 May 1874. Mollie says "Ed's mother was buried about a week ago." This would have made the death of Prudence at the end of April 1874 instead of the end of May 1874. Since Prudence's death was not reported until May 31, 1875, the death was most likely reported incorrectly in the official Cass County death records.

The 1865 New York State Census states that Ruth Dunham was born in Wayne County, New York. However, per the Handy Book for Genealogists, Wayne County was not created until 1823. It was formed from Ontario and Seneca Counties, New York. The 1855 New York State Census states that she was born in Cayuga County, New York which may be correct as it was formed in 1799.

One is recorded giving a mortgage for 105 acres in Penfield on January 23, 1802. He is listed "of Claverack, Columbia County." Since he sold this piece in conjunction with Gershom Dunham and Christopher Prentice in 1806, we believe Silas, five years younger than Gershom, was probably related to him. Further, we believe this Silas is the one who resided in Webster in 1850 with wife Lucy M. and Ancil, age 20. This Silas Dunham, age 63, is listed as a doctor. Lucy M. Dunham, age 54, is the heir of Deborah Peet. A Silas Dunham, living alone in the Penfield village area in 1810, is believed to be the same man who died June 14, 1860 aged 74 years in Webster, New York."

"Silas Dunham, one of the grantors of 1806, left a record of the mortgage he gave to Daniel Penfield for the property on January 23, 1802. At that time, Silas Dunham was from Claverack, Columbia County, New York, as was Daniel Penfield. His down-payment for the 105 acres was ten shillings. The total mortage was for $421.20, which was to be paid in three years. On that day that Silas, Gershom and the Prentices made the sale, the discharge of the above mortgage was recorded." He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1800 in Claverack, Columbia Co., New York.³²⁴

He married Hannah Underhill, daughter of James Underhill and Deborah Southerland, circa 1833.³³³ Henry died on 18 Apr 1885 in Quincy, Branch Co., Michigan.^334,335 His body was interred in Lakeview Cemetery, in Quincy, Branch Co., Michigan.^334,336

Henry Taylor is believed to have had two or three wives as two of his children may have been born before he married Hannah Underhill. His son, William H. Taylor was born in 1826 and his son, Gilbert Hiram Taylor, was born in December 1832. According to Hannah Underhill's obituary, she and Henry had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before she died on 4 Jul 1883. This would probably make their marriage in 1833. In a compilation of cemetery records from the Lee Center Cemetery in Lee, Oneida Co., New York, there is a record for a Caroline Taylor, wife of Henry Taylor, died July 19, 1830, age 22 years. This may be Henry Taylor's first wife.

In the 1835 New York State Census for Lee, Oneida Co., New York, a Henry Taylor is found with 5 males in the household and 2 females. The two females may be Hannah (Underhill) Taylor and Caroline L. Taylor. Two of the five males may be William H. Taylor and Gilbert Hiram Taylor who were both born before 1835. I do not know who the other males might be. He was listed as a resident in the census report in 1874 in Quincy Township, Branch Co., Michigan.²⁵⁷

Per American Genealogist, Vol. 25, pp 59-62 (1949), "Gideon Sage must have died before 7 May 1753, for on that date Hugh White of Middletown, Conn., signed bond of 200 [pounds] and was appointed guardian to Giles Sage, a minor of Middletown. [Middletown Probate District, File #2883.] A Connecticut War Service Marker has been placed on the grave of this Giles Sage, who is called "Corporal," and to whom is attributed the service in Connecticut Men in the Revolution, p. 481. He was Corporal in Capt. Butler's Company. That his first wife was Hannah Sheldon is found in the following Statement by Edgar Jones, 6 March 1851, Newark, N.J.: "My Grandfather's name on my Mother's side was Giles Sage, and my Mother, Hannah Sage, was his only child by his first wife, whose maiden name was Hannah Sheldon. He was a wealthy farmer and lived in Middletown, Conn. He had a second wife, by whom he had several children. I know not how many. Owen [Orrin?] Sage and William Sage are living and I believe his sons Eben and James, are living.... "My Grandfather, Zebulon Jones, lived in Middletown. Grandfather's last wife's name was Martha Schofield. He had two sons by her, Ira and William Jones. William was my father. "My Father lived when he married my Mother, Hannah Sage, in Middletown Upper Houses (now Cromwell). He was a tailor by trade." According to Sages, Past and Present, "Anna had seven young children when Giles died. Her neighbor, almost directly across Pleasant Street, was Hezekiah 4 Ranney (Joseph 3, Joseph 2, Thomas 1), a member of an old Scotch family, born Sept., 1742. He had seven older children by his first marriage and one by the second. In 1795, he had sold the Ranney homestead which he inherited, and moved to Edinburg, Saratoga County, New York. He was a capable and celebrated schoolmaster in both states. In 1798, Hezekiah Ranney married the Widow Anne Sage and she took her family to Edinburg. When Mr. Ranney died in 1826, Anna went to live with her son Deacon Oren Sage, a prominent shoe manufacturer and Baptist layman there since 1808, in Ballston Spa, N.Y., and moved in 1827 to Rochester, N.Y., where she died Aug. 27, 1832, "aged 66 years," in the severe cholera epidemic of that day.
