Regarding
one Proctor Higgins
From New Hampshire born around 1815 (guessing from Wisconsin Census
of 1860) Married one Juliette Orinda Willis of New York seems they
may have been married in NY. Sired Franklin Augustus Higgins April
9th, 1848 in Waukesha Co, Wisc.
Proctor would be my Great-Great Grandfather. For some reason I am
having a much harder time tracing my Father's lineage.

HIGGINS, Lulu Blanche (Galbreath) -
(4 April 1888 - 22
Dec 1942)
Lulu Blanche Galbreath was born April 4, 1888, in
Grant county, Ind. She moved with her parents to
Wisconsin when she was a small girl and had lived
since in different parts of the state.
She was married to Isaac Higgins Dec. 24, 1908. They
lived on a farm near Sabin, Wis., for some time
afterward, owning and operating different farms and
businesses until they settled, about 23 years ago, on
the farm in the town of York
(Clark Co), which still
is the family home.
She is survived by her husband and her two children,
Floyd of Baltimore, Md., and Geraldine, now Mrs. Burke
Stannard, Toronto, Canada two grandsons, Larry and
Scott Higgins, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Higgins and
also a sister, Mrs. Christ Feutz, town of Washburn and
a brother, Roscoe Galbreath of Canada.
Mrs. Higgins passed away at her home, surrounded by
her loved ones, Dec. 22, 1942, after a severe illness
of about a month.
The departed was educated in the schools of Clark
county. She taught in the rural districts for four
years before her marriage. She also taught for many
years after she became a wife and mother, being most
successful in this profession. She was one of Clark
County's oldest teachers. Mrs. Higgins also was active
in civic and social clubs in her home community. She
had been a member of the Christian church since she
was sixteen years of age, always a worker in any
church which was close at hand whether or not it
happened to be her own denomination.
One of the great pleasures in her life was the fact
that she was permitted to live close to her beloved
sister, Mrs. Christ Feutz. She and a brother now are
the only survivors of the Robert Galbreath family.
Present for the rites from distant places were: Lant
Higgins, eldest brother of Isaac Higgins, Janesville
Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Robins, Sabin, Wis. and Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Wanless, Hillsboro, the women being Mr.
Higgins' sisters.
The daughter had been at home assisting in the care of
her mother. Floyd also had been here to visit his
mother and to do what he could for her.
Funeral services were held at the community church at
Granton at two p.m. Saturday, the Rev. O. Asp of
Neillsville officiating. Burial was made in the
Windfall cemetery.

Source: History of Door County Wisconsin The County beautiful -
by Hjalmar R. Holand M.A. S. J. Clarke Publishing Company Chicago, Illinois. 1917
-Allen Higgins-
For more than a half century Allen Higgins, who died in April 1917, had made his home within the
borders of Door County and for an equally long period he and his wife had traveled lifes journey together.
His first visit to the county was made in 1856, when he made a trip to Washington Island. Moreover,
Wisconsin claims him as a native son, for his birth occurred at Bristol, Racine County, on the 20th of May
1839, his parents being William R. and Cynthia D. (Case) Higgins, who were natives of Connecticut and
New York respectively. The former the son of Fitch A. Higgins, a veteran of the war of 1812, while the
latter was the daughter of Grove Case, who became a resident of Illinois in early pioneer times. The
Higgins family was founded in Wisconsin by Fitch A. Higgins, who in the early
"30"s took up his abode in
Racine County, near Kenosha, where he followed the occupation of farming. It was in that county that
William R. Higgins and
Cynthia D. Case were married.
William R. Higgins was the first white man to settle in Bristol Township, Racine County, now Kenosha
County, where he took up government land. During the period of Allen Higgins' boyhood Indians were far more
numerous than the white settlers in that section of the state and it seemed that the work of development
and progress had scarcely been begun, but the family took an active part of promoting the work of
civilization in that district.
No event of special importance occurred to vary the routine of life for Allen Higgins during the
period of his boyhood and youth but in August 1862, when he was about 23 years of age, he responded to his
country's call for troops and joined the Union army as a member of Company H, Thirty-Third regiment of
Wisconsin infantry. He was with his company in all the battles and campaigns in which it participated and
proved his loyalty on many a hotly contested field. Promotion came to him from time to time. He was first
made Sergeant, then Orderly Sergeant and in September 1864, was made Sergeant Major of his regiment. He took
part in engagements in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and Alabama
and after participating in twenty-two battles, sieges and skirmishes he was mustered out at Vicksburg in
August 1865, and was honorably discharged at Madison the following month. [More
Civil War
ONSITE]
It was on the 3rd of October 1865, that Allen Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Rosanna M.
Farnsworth, who was born in Washington, New Hampshire, September 5, 1844 and was brought to Wisconsin in
1851, when her parents settled in Kenosha County. The young couple, together with William R. Higgins,
removed from Kenosha County to Baileys Harbor, where father and son built a pier and steamboat dock and
became agents for the Goodrich Transportation Company. They got out wood, ties and lumber and developed a
good business. Allen Higgins also cleared a farm. The pier, which was called Higgins Pier, was destroyed by
a storm in 1880. After the father's death, which occurred in the early 70s, Allen Higgins had
conducted the business alone. From time to time he was called upon for public service and held various town
offices and was chairman of the town board when appointed to the office of the Clerk of the Court by
Judge Meyers of the 10th Judicial District. He then removed with his family to Sturgeon Bay and acted in
that capacity for thirty-one years, beginning on the 1st of October 1881. He was elected at each election
following his first appointment and made a most splendid record in office. No higher testimonial of
capability and faithful service could be given than the fact that he was retained in the position
thirty-one years. In 1912, however, he declined to become a candidate for reelection, for he had passed
the allotted age of man three score years and ten (70) and he felt the duties should be assumed by one of
younger years. He was by then the oldest clerk of the court in Wisconsin in both point of age and in years
of continuous service. Moreover he enjoyed the distinction of being the best informed clerk in the
state on naturalization laws. He became known as the "father of the courthouse" and the younger generation
that came into active service there was continually seeking his advice. He was held in the highest esteem,
being honored and respected for his personal worth as well as his marked official ability. Upon his
retirement those that were his associates in the courthouse manifested their high appreciation of his
worth by tendering him a banquet, at which forty-three guests were present, including members of the County
board. County Officers, including members of the Door County bar, representatives of the press and prominent
citizens.
Mr. And Mrs. Higgins became the parents of a son and daughter: Dr Allen F. Higgins, now residing in Tampa,
Florida, with whom they occasionally spend the winters: and Mrs. Arthur T. Harris
of Sturgeon Bay.
This worthy couple celebrated their golden wedding on the 2nd of October 1915, after enjoying fifty years of
happiness and health together. They had met together the hardships and privations of pioneer life. For this
was a frontier district when in 1865 they removed to Door County. Mr. Higgins had previously visited the
county in 1856, when he went to Washington Island to get a stock of evergreens for a nursery. He returned
about a decade and thereafter made his home here until his death, April 2nd, 1917. He was held in the highest
esteem and the circle of his friends was almost coextensive with the circle of his acquaintances. The
official career of few residents of Door County perhaps has extended over so long a period and none
has been more faultless in honor, fearless in conduct and stainless in reputation. In his passing Door
County has lost not only a worthy pioneer, but a man who was honored and respected by all who knew him.

- DWIGHT ROBINSON -
With the history of agricultural development in Kenosha county, the
name of Dwight Robinson was closely associated and when he passed
away his death was the occasion of deep regret because of the place
which he had made for himself in public regard. He dated his arrival
in Wisconsin from April, 1856, being at that time a young man of
twenty-four years. He was born in Tolland county, Connecticut, July
26, 1832, his parents being Gurdon and Lucy (Edson)
Robinson. The father was born in Connecticut, July 21, 1788, and
was a son of Sabin and Dorcas Robinson. He served as a
soldier in the War of 1812 and was actively engaged at New London,
Connecticut. He devoted his life to farming and passed away April 3,
1867, when seventy-nine years of age. His wife, a native of
Stafford, Tolland county, Connecticut, was a daughter of Levi
and Molly Edson, and her death occurred in her native town,
April 10, 1867, when she was seventy-five years of ago. Mr. and Mrs.
Robinson had a family of eleven children: Sally, born March
27, 1813, was married and had a daughter and one son; Roxana,
born March 11, 1815, married and had one son and one daughter;
Lucy C. was born May 30, 1816; Daniel E. was born
November 29, 1817; Elijah was born February 8, 1819; Giles
was born April 15, 1821; the next child, born June 8, 1823, died
unnamed; Maria, born August 14, 1825, was married and had
three sons; Dwight, born May 3, 1828, died in early
childhood; Angeline, born November 18, 1830, became the wife
of William G. Parker and had one son, and Dwight, the
second of the name, was born July 26, 1832, was married and had four
sons and two daughters.
At the place of his nativity, Dwight Robinson spent the days of his
boyhood and youth, and in 1856 he first visited Wisconsin to look
after the interests of his brother, Elijah Robinson, who had
invested in land in Kenosha county. In 1860 he was married in this
county, after which he returned to Connecticut, where he remained
until the death of his parents. At that time he once more came to
Wisconsin and purchased land from John Oliver, continuing its
development and cultivation until his death. He also purchased an
adjoining tract of fifteen acres and another tract of twenty acres,
while his wife became owner of eleven acres. He was actively and
successfully engaged in general agricultural pursuits for many
years, and the careful management of his business affairs brought
him substantial success.
On the 28th of October, 1860, occurred the marriage of Dwight
Robinson and Miss Frances Sarah Higgins, a representative
of an old New England family. Her great-grandfather, Timothy
Higgins, was a soldier of the Revolutionary war and died in
Wolcott, Connecticut, July 12, 1829, at the age of seventy-five
years, while his wife, Hannah, passed away in Wolcott, March
5, 1833, in her seventy-sixth year. Their son, Fitch A. Higgins, was
born at Milford, Connecticut, July 11, 1793, and became one of the
first settlers of Kenosha county, securing a tract of government
land in Pleasant Prairie township, whereon he built a log cabin and
reared his family. On the 8th of March, 1815, in Middlebury,
Connecticut, he wedded Amanda Royce, who was born in Wallingford,
Connecticut, May 31, 1793, and died at Southport, Wisconsin, May 31,
1840. Their children were Emeline Tuttle, William Royce,
Mary Angeline Taylor, Harriet Eliza Richards and
Hannah Amanda Foster. For his second wife, Mr. Higgins chose
Lucretia Sibley, who died July 11, 1886, at the age of
seventy-four years, six months and twenty-six days. They had two
children, Charles Timothy and Frederick Filmore. The
father, Fitch A. Higgins, had served as a drummer boy in the
War of 1812. He died in Pleasant Prairie, March 1, 1882, at the age
of eighty-eight years.
William Royce Higgins, the father of Mrs. Robinson, was born
in Wolcott, Connecticut, May 14, 1817, and died at Bailey’s Harbor,
in Door county, Wisconsin, April 1, 1874, at the age of fifty-seven
years. He married Cynthia Dorcas Case, who was born at
Westfield, New York, January 23, 1847, and was one of a family of
eight children—three daughters and five sons. The Case family trace
their lineage down from the Earl of Angus, third son of a Scottish
nobleman, who lived in England in 1400. The American progenitor was
John Case, who wedded Sarah Spencer. One of this
family, Alma Case, became the wife of George Randall,
who during the Revolutionary war, was captured while fighting with
General Burgoyne. The parents of Mrs. William R. Higgins, on leaving
the east, removed to Kankakee, Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. William R.
Higgins became pioneers of Wisconsin and he carried on farming to
provide for the family. Mrs. Higgins died at Sturgeon Bay,
Wisconsin, February 14, 1888. She was the mother of twelve children:
Fitch Allan; William R., who died in infancy; Sarah
Frances, now Mrs. Robinson; Mrs. Mary Alana Mowery;
Timothy; Mrs. Laura Amanda Ross; Mrs. Florence Amelia
Overholt; Frank William; George Valentine; Mrs.
Dora Capitola Kalamback; Clara Viola; and Frederick.
Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Robinson became the parents of six children:
Florence Emogene, the wife of Thomas F. Blanklcy, a
resident of Litchfield, Illinois, by whom she has seven children,
Charlie, Fred, Mrs. Mary Stuttle, Mrs. Elsie
Elvidge, Thomas, Stella and Floren;
George W., who married Stella Merville and has two
children, Howard and Mary; Giles, who married
Agnes Anderson and has three children; Bert J., who
married Laure H. Kulckig; Willard E., who married
Mabel Learned and has three children, Marjorie, Verna
and Doris; and Mina E., who is the wife of Edgar
Aber and has two children, Margaret Elizabeth and
Ellen Ruth.
Mr. Robinson passed away May 5, 1888, and although many years have
since come and gone he is yet remembered by his neighbors and
friends. He had long been a resident of the county, had taken an
active part in its development and had contributed to its progress
along agricultural lines. He was always upright and honorable in his
dealings with his fellow men, and his many sterling traits had
established him firmly in public regard.

THE HIGGINS HOMESTEAD
(The Jochem Farm)
by Dan Reese
Added 06
February 2002
Samuel Higgins claimed the first homestead in Cedar
Township in Buffalo County (Wisconsin). Higgins was
born in Maine on March 30, 1811. His father, William
Higgins, served in the War of 1812. In 1837 Samuel set
out to see the country, spending time in several states and finally settling in Grant County,
Wisconsin. His first wife Matilda gave him nine
children. His second wife was Priscilla Ellen Wamsley Ewer. They were married in Wisconsin on November 26,
1865. Mrs. Ewer had five children from her first
marriage, and Samuel and Priscilla had two offspring, but one of them died. The Higgins family arrived in
Buffalo County on November 10, 1872. Higgins, a carpenter, built a small shanty near
Gibbon to house his family while he sought out a
claim. He found his farm on the East Half of the Southeast Quarter of Section 22, in Cedar Township,
built the usual dugout in the side of the hill, and
took up residence. Occasionally Indians passed
through begging for food and feed for their horses.
One night some difficult Indians tried to break into
his dugout, but Higgins succeeded in driving them off.
Shortly after the Higginses arrived, John Davis and his wife settled in Section 2, also making a dugout in
which to spend the winter.
The building of a place to live was not easy in
those first years in Cedar Township. Even for a
dugout, the materials used were either those at hand
or had to be transported some distance, usually from Gibbon some twenty miles away. As described by Harry
Crawford, in Where Buffalo Roamed, p. 62

History of Vernon County, Wisconsin. Illustrated, Springfield, Ill., Union Publishing Company, 1884; p 520;
Jacob Higgins was one of the earlier settlers of Franklin town, and is well remembered by the pioneers. He was born near Ithica, N. Y., Oct. 2, 1802, and was there reared, receiving a good education. He taught school in New York in early life, and then went to Michigan, where he opened a store and was engaged in mercantile pursuits. On Nov. 10, 1842, he there married
Phebe Wisel, and seven years later came to Vernon (then known as Bad Ax) county, Wis., arriving May 10, 1849. He located at Liberty Pole, and immediately bought a quarter section of land on sections 25 and 26, town 12 north range 5 west. He continued in mercantile pursuits, was also
postmaster, and continued in that office until his death. He held various town offices. In March, 1857, he removed his family on his farm one mile west of Liberty Pole, where he
permanently settled, and was a prominent and well respected citizen up to his death, which occurred Sept. 4,
1858. Mrs. Higgins was born at Parma, Cattaraugas Co., N. Y., and removed to Indiana with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have two living
children--Sidney, who was born in Steuben County, Ind., Sept 2, 1843, has always lived on the old homestead, married
Lucy A., daughter of Jesse Davis, and early settler of this town. They have four children.
Judson, the second son, was born in
St. Joseph Co., Mich., Aug 11, 1845, married Alice Robson, and has four children.
Zuleima, the only daughter, was born in White Pigeon, Mich., Dec. 28, 1847, and died on the old homestead, Feb. 16, 1868.
