I've been trying to find out more about James Higgins and Catherine Van
Pelt. I suspect this may be the correct family that I'm looking for, but I don't have
many resources available to prove one way or another.
I'm trying to prove that their son Joseph Samuel Higgins (1843-1900) is the same Joseph S. Higgins
(b. abt 1842 NJ - d. aft 1880) who married Ella Osterhoudt in 1878 in Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co, NY. They are found
on the 1880 census in Dutchess Co, NY:

I don't know when Joseph S. Higgins or wife Ella died, but the 1880 census was the last time I found info on
Ella, but it's possible that Joseph was on the 1900 census in Middlesex Co, NJ with his widowed sister in
law. In 1900, their son Harry J. Higgins was living with his grandmother Margaret Osterhoudt in Dutchess
Co, NY.

Margaret Osterhoudt - 63, b. Mar1837 NY, widow, mother of 2 children-1 still living, farmer, owned home
Harry Higgins-23, grandson, b. Jan 1877 NY, occ: Printer
By 1910, Henry "Harry" J. Higgins had moved to the Bronx, where he died in 1932. He married
Edith Edna Luikert in 1907.

From a small town near Galway
Our great grandfather, Bartholomew Higgins, came to the U.S. in the 1850's and first settled in Lancaster,
PA, then moved to Illinois [See Census details]. He served in the Civil War in
Renwick's Raiders from Elgin.
Bart's son, Edward Charles (Higgins), was my grandfather. Edward became an attorney in
Chicago [1910
Census]. It is family lore that he was a great friend of Clarence Darrow and sat with him at the Scopes trial.
Edward named his first son, Clarence, in honor of his friend Clarence
Darrow. Clarence never married so had no children. The second child was named
Whilomena (Wilma) who married but also had no children. The third child was
Eileen who was quite ill and died when she was a teenager or in her early twenties. His fourth child was
Edward Charles (Higgins), Jr., who married and had four children.
I am wondering if he might be related to any of the Higgins in your genealogy.

Ireland to New Jersey to Iowa
The earliest Higgins family that I know of is Thomas and Margaret Agin-Higgins who lived New Jersey Monouth
Co. Have maps where they lived. He was a farmer. They had a John, Mary, Bridget,
Margaret and I believe a Rose. The next information I have on them is when
their daughter Mary Higgins marries Thomas Doolin and Mary's Sister marries a
Grady. Thomas Doolin and Grady were friends and Grady signed Thomas Doolin
Nationalization papers. I have a map where Thomas Higgins lived at in the early 1880's near Holbrook,
Iowa located in Iowa Co. Green township. Margaret is shown to have lived several place with her children
and they finally died and are buried with the Thomas Doolin Family at the Holbrook Cemetery St. Michaels
Catholic Church. John Higgins ran a tavern in Iowa City and I believe that one of the girls went to
Nebraska and one to Mishagan. But then I loose track of where all that family went to. They show up on records in
the Iowa City Catholic Church in the early 1900's as visiting their mom at the church, I believe it was St.
Patrick Church.

Hi, I believe I have a real puzzler...
My great-uncle was Richard Higgins, born in Valley Township, Chester County, PA
around 1874.
Richard was the son of Martin Higgins (b. Ireland 2/05/1836,
Ballymacotter, County Cork, Ireland) and Ellen Toomey Higgins (b. 1837,
Ireland). Martin and Ellen were married in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Coatesville, PA on 1/27/1869. Their children
were all born in Valley Township, Chester County, PA:
Ellen E., b.04/1871; d. 01/1959
Richard, b. 9/1873? 24 Mar d. unknown
John Joseph, b. 10/1875; d. 11/1936 (my grandfather)
William M. b. 9/1878; d. 9/1954
Thomas E. b. 4/1881; d. before 1964
Mary Teresa, b. 3/1885; d. 7/1977
Margaret Elizabeth, b. 8/1889; d. 3/1963
The story goes that my Great-Uncle Richard was kind of a hellion. He
married a woman named Margaret, b. approx 1883, and had two children, Martin, b. approx. 1904; and
Marian, b. approx.1908. Richard lived in Indiana at the time of his father, Martin's death in
1908 and he, his wife, and children show-up in the 1910 Milwaukee, WI, Census. Finally,
we know Richard was dead at the time of my grandfather's death in 1936.
Supposedly, Richard and Margaret took their two children to Niagara
Falls. Then, Richard and Margaret disappeared. The two children were discovered in a motel in Niagara Falls, apparently
abandoned. Their Aunt Ellen Higgins, Richard's older sister, went to
Niagara Falls to get them, brought them back to Chester County, PA, and raised them. Richard
and Margaret were never heard from again. I would really like to know the details of Richard and Margaret's disappearance.
No one really knows what became of Martin and Marion after Aunt Ellen
took them in either.
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so
much,

Georgia , Arkansas and Oklahoma
My grandfather was Herman Higgins, born 7-17-1895. He married Leola Lee July 23, 1916 in Warner, Oklahoma.
His mother was Madora (Dora) Robinson Higgins. She married James Higgins October 25, 1894 in Yell County,
Arkansas. She was 17 and James (aka J H) was 21. James died prior to 1900. He was reportedly a
Methodist minister.
It is believed that James was the son of John and Sarah (Sahra) Higgins of Ellsworth Township, Logan
County Arkansas.
John and Sarah had the following children:
Nathan Higgins 1867
Disy (Dicey?) Higgins 1868,
George Higgins 1872,
James Higgins 1874,
Sallie Higgins 1875,
Cassy Higgins 1877 and
Kaleb Higgins 1880.
All were born in Arkansas except Nathan and Disy who were born in Tennessee, according to the
1880 Logan County Arkansas census. John was from Georgia.
Sarah from North Carolina.
I believe Disy married a W L Corley July 11, 1886 in Logan County Arkansas.
I am searching for more information about James' brothers and sisters and ancestors. I also would like
to know how my greatgrandfather (James) died at a young age.
Thanks.

Higgins Queries
1) Richard Higgins, died 3/10/1904, aged 74, is
buried in one of the cemeteries in Flemington, NJ.
Can anyone tell me which one?
2) My ancestor John Frazee married Mary Oliver,
daughter of Samuel Oliver and Mary Higgins. My guess
is that Samuel Oliver was born in Stamford, CT in
the mid-late 1600's and that Mary Higgins was born
in Eastham, MA also in the mid-late 1600's. I am
very interested in any information on Samuel and
Mary, especially on Mary, of whom I know little, and
of her Higgins family, of whom I know nothing.
