A Submission from Susan Ann Compton Carpenter
Date: 28 July 2004
Area: England, Canada, USA

I am looking for any information about Ann Heathcote Higgins (b. 1789 Blackwall and Stepney, London, England to d. 1860 Louisville, KY). Ann's father is John Higgins apparently living in the Stepney area (London) about 1770 onward.
Ann married John Thomas Want at Stepney Church (I'm thinking it was probably St. Dunstan's parish church) before emigrating to America through Quebec and Perth, Ontario, Canada between 1812 and 1814.

Ann Heathcote Higgins and John Thomas Want's children are:

John Thomas Want (Jr.)

Ann H. Want
         (1812-1885) born Poplar, Middlesex, England,

Mary Elizabeth Jane Want

It is assumed this covered the Tennessee River. It is also known he was a pilot on the Ohio and, during the Civil, the Mississippi.

BIOGRAPHY: My grandmother, Annie Compton is mentioned in the Want Families in American several times. In one exchange with the author, Grandma wrote that her grandfather John William and her GGrandfather, Captain John T Want "owned a flatboat and sold supplies up and down the river."

BIOGRAPHY: Grandma Annie Compton also told me that she had often taken a "packet" from Smithland to various places on the Ohio. I think she said a packet was a type of flat-bottomed boat used for goods transports.
