Samuel A. Higgins/Higgans enlisted and enrolled, at the age of 20,
as a Private in Captain William J. Neal's Company* 4th Regiment
Texas Volunteers on Oct 28,1861 at Camp Hebert near Hempstead
(Waller County, Texas) for 1 year service(record later states 3
years). Was enrolled by Captain Neal. He was captured near Yellow
Bayou, Louisiana May 18, 1864.Sent to New Orleans on May 21,1864.
Sent to St. Louis General Hospital at New Orleans May 28,1864 for
acute pneumonia. Name appears on a list dated July 8,1864 of
patients at U.S.A. General Hospital at New Orleans, sent back to
military prison on July 25,1864. Sent to St. Louis General Hospital
at New Orleans August 5,1864 for Chronic Diarrhea. Released back to
Military prison August 13,1864. Admitted again to St. Louis General
Hospital, La for same on August 27,1864. Name appears on a list of
prisoners who died on October 8,1864 at New Orleans. Cause of death
was Chronic Diarrhea. Interred October 8,1864 in grave # 386 at
Monument Cemetery..
His death record gives the following information:
Resident of Johnson County, Texas before enlistment. was single. Age
at death 22. Born in Mississippi.
