Funeral: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 11:00 A.M.

Burial: Bryn Zion Cemetery, Mount Gilead, Ohio
Dean
Warren Higgins, age 81, of 5701 St. Route 42 N, Mount
Gilead, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 26, 2006, at the home of
his birth doing what he loved, working with his tractors on his
farm.
Dean was born on March 13, 1925, the son of the late Clark and Josie
(Fogle) Higgins. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School on May
28, 1943.
On July 28, 1945, Dean was drafted into the U.S. Army serving during
World War II overseas as a 5th grade technician, a military
policeman, and telephone switchboard operator.
A lifelong farmer and “hard worker,” Dean began working on the farm
as soon as he became able to do his chores. He milked cows, chopped
wood, raised cattle and seven children, and then grain farmed until
he semi retired to care for his wife Frieda. Being so in tune with
nature, on a humid sultry August night he could “hear the corn grow
at night.” Every spring he looked forward to the new beginning and
the planting of seeds.
On January 14, 1962, Dean married his loving wife of over 42 years,
Frieda Mae (Field) Higgins, who preceded him in death on November 4,
2004. Together, Frieda and Dean, enjoyed traveling and doing mission
work together, making several trips to Alaska and others to
Michigan. They also enjoyed traveling and playing dominos with their
dear friends.
Dean has been an active member of the Bryn Zion Baptist Church all
of his life, holding several positions in the church and was
currently serving as the Head Deacon, and the Assistant
Superintendent. He truly lived his Christian beliefs, and was an
“angel on earth” to his wife, family, and friends.
Dean was a member of Gideon’s, the Farm Bureau Council a.k.a.
“Halves and Better Halves,” the Antique Tractor Association, and the
Silver King Tractor Club. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels,
and became the infamous “live raccoon trapper” for Hospice of Morrow
County.
As a father, Dean will be remembered for having the “patience of
Job,” and for having a deep understanding and love for his children.
As a “grandpa,” his “strong farm hands” became soft to hold each new
grandchild, and he embodied exactly what a father and grandfather
“should” be. Dean was deeply loved and will be truly missed by his
family and friends.
He is survived by his loving children, which include four sons
Robert C. Trainer, Michael L. Trainer, and James H. (Joanne) Trainer
all of Mount Gilead, and Thomas D. (Julie) Trainer of New Carlisle,
Ohio; two daughters Laura E. (Danny) Young and Susan A. (Lonnie)
Prater both of Mount Gilead; a daughter-in-law, Rita Trainer of
Redding, California; 21 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and 3
more coming this fall; a sister-in-law Roberta Higgins; two nephews,
a niece, and two great nieces.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a
son Larry E. Trainer; brother Ned P. Higgins (see obituary below);
and a nephew Robert P. Higgins.
The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the
Craven & Snyder Funeral Home, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bryn
Zion Baptist Church, 5520 County Road 240, Mount Gilead, with Pastor
Jerry Mathias officiating. Burial with military honors by V.F.W.
Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow at Bryn Zion Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Morrow County, P.
O. Box 86, Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338, Gideon’s International, P. O.

Professor Clinton O. Higgins.—Talented and cultured, possessing the
mental temperament, tastes and caliber that naturally incline one
towards a professional career. Professor Clinton O. Higgins wisely
chose teaching as a vocation, and is now successfully employed as
superintendent of the Troy Township High School and as
superintendent also, of the district schools of Troy township. A son
of Enoch Higgins and his first wife, whose maiden name was Leah
Lovett, and their only child. Professor Higgins was born on a farm
in Franklin township, Morrow county, Ohio, and there spent his
earlier life.
Laying a substantial foundation for his future education in the
district schools of Franklin township. Clinton O. Higgins afterward
continued his studies at the Mt. Gilead High School. On leaving that
institution he began life as a teacher and taught school several
terms. Desirous of further fitting: himself for his life work, he
subsequently entered the Ohio Northern University, at Ada, and there
completed the scientific course, receiving the well- earned degree
of bachelor of science. Since his graduation from the university
Professor Higgins has devoted his entire time and energies to
teaching, having taught in the district schools and serving as
superintendent of the Congress township district schools for two
years. He was subsequently elected by local board of education as
superintendent of the Troy Township High School and of its district
schools, and is now serving his fourth year in that capacity, his
retention in this position from year to year
being proof of his ability and success as an educator and
superintendent.
Politically the Professor is a stanch advocate of the principles of
the Republican party, and has served as chairman of the Morrow
County Convention and as president of the Republican Central
Committee. He has also been clerk of Franklin township. Fraternally
he is a member of Chester Lodge, No. 283, A. F. and A. M., of which
he is past master; of Gilead Chapter, No. 59, R. A. M.; of Eveline
Chapter, No. 146, 0. E. S.. of Chesterville; and of the Charles H.
Hull Lodge, No. 195, K. of P. He is also a member of the Sons of
Veterans Camp at Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Religiously Professor Higgins
belongs to the Pulaskiville Methodist Episcopal church, and has
served as superintendent of its Sunday school. For six years he was
one of the members of the board of school examiners for Morrow
county, retiring from the position in August, 1910. He is one of the
stockholders of the Morrow County Telephone Company, one of the more
important enterprises of this part of the
state.
Professor Higgins makes his home in Franklin township, where he was
born, reared and educated, and where he is held in the highest
esteem for his sterling worth and high integrity of character as a
cultured gentleman and faithful teacher.

Higgins families of Pike Township of Brown County Ohio
HIGGINS, James D.
James D. Higgins was among the earlier settlers,
having come to Pike township in 1818. He taught a
school the first year he was here on the Allen farm.
He was a native of North Carolina, and was married in
1822 to Nancy Fiscus. He settled on the farm now the property of
Elizabeth Strain; died in 1837, and his
remains were interred in the old Allen Graveyard, on
the land now owned by Charlotte Carr. Nancy survived
him many years and died in 1877. They had nine children--Robert, Mary, Dow, Sarah, William, Andrew,
Nancy, John and James (Higgins), all of whom are still living,
five being residents of the township.
