John G. Higgins, 2-term Amherst mayor - Obituary
Thursday, November 15, 2007
Alana Baranick - Plain Dealer Reporter
Amherst- John G. Higgins, who focused on beautifying
Amherst during his two terms as the city's mayor, died
Tuesday at Community Health Partners Hospital in
Lorain.

The 71-year-old U.S. Steel Corp. retiree began his 20
years of public service as a Ward I councilman in
1984. He was president of Amherst City Council for
four years before he was elected mayor in 1995. He
stepped down after losing his bid for a third term in
2003.
Mayor David A. Taylor, his successor, credited Higgins
with working with the Lorain County Metro Parks to
establish Amherst Beaver Creek Reservation.
The 65-acre park with its paved loop trail, picnic
pavilion, playground, soccer field and visitors center
was the first joint effort between a city and a metro
park in the state of Ohio, according to the park
system's Web site.
Also under Higgins' leadership, the Police Department
moved its headquarters to a new facility on North Lake
Street near the park entrance.
Higgins was known for taking a hands-on approach to
beautification projects. When the renovation of the
historic building in downtown Amherst that houses City
Hall got started in 1998, the mayor got up on the roof
to instruct workers.
He helped lay stone for a nature habitat at Powers
Elementary School and helped with the construction of
a gazebo downtown, his family said.
Higgins liked to explain how he came to be born in
Amherst, even though his parents lived in Lorain. His
folks were out for a Sunday drive in March 1936, when
his mother went into labor. As a result, Higgins, the
youngest of the couple's five children, was born at
Amherst Hospital.
He grew up in Lorain, where he graduated from St. Mary
High School in 1954. In 1958, he received a bachelor's
degree from the University of Dayton.
Higgins was the son of a steelworker, and he became a
supervisor at U.S. Steel Corp.'s Lorain Works. He
retired in 1989.
He and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Amherst in 1973.
Higgins did major landscaping work on the steep hill
on which his house was built. Using bricks and
sandstone from Amherst quarries, he created a fountain
and a pond behind his house.
He enjoyed taking nature walks on his property with
his three children, two of whom survive. His son,
Thomas J., died of injuries from a car crash at age 36
in 2002.
Survivors: Wife of 44 years, Marilyn; son, Timothy of
Cleveland; daughter, Mary Lynn Woodyard of Amherst;
four grandchildren; a brother; and a sister
Services: 10 a.m. today, St. Joseph Catholic Church,
200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst

HISTORY OF LOWER SCIOTO VALLEY, OHIO
JACKSON COUNTY BIOGRAPHIES
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP
Henry Whitfield Higgins, blacksmith at Keystone Furnace, was born 09 Sep 1837 in Jackson County, and
is a son of Henry J. and Ann Higgins, who were born and reared in Bedford County VA. They came to Ohio in
1832 and died in Jackson County. Our subject began to work at furnaces when nine years old and continued to
work at them till the breaking out of the late civil war, when he enlisted in August 1862 in Company H, 27
OVI, as a private for three years. He participated in the battles of Corinth, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain,
siege and capture of Atlanta, and a number of others. On account of having injured his eyes, he was
discharged at Camp Dennison, Ohio, 07 Jul 1865. He then returned home and engaged in blacksmithing for a
time, after which he was engaged in making roads and attending to the wood supply for the Keystone Furnace,
and was assistant manager of the furnace for eight years. He was married 14 Mar 1858, to Virginia,
daughter of Thomas and Amanda Dickason, early settlers of Gallia County. They have a family of six sons and
one daughter. He and wife are members of the Methodist Church, of which he is Steward.
