His wife, Mary Higgins, received a widows pension February 21 1896.

His pension file notes he also served in Company "D" 135th New York Infantry.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT - Mr. Rody Higgins, a brakeman on Northern Central Railway, residing in this village, was so severely injured at Penn Yan on Tuesday of last week, that he died from his injuries on Friday. He was engaged in coupling cars, and in some manner two of them missed connecting, and caught his head between them, a large nut on a bolt crushing into the side of his head, making an ugly wound. His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of friends.

Elizabeth Higgins (nee Clark) had received a widow's pension until December 7, 1865 when she married Alexander Mailer at Hamburg, Erie County, New York. She had first married Thomas Higgins August 17, 1856 at St. Patrick's Church at Buffalo New York. They had one child, William Higgins, who was born February 8, 1861.

We are requested to call attention to the death of Barney Higgins, aged 50,an old resident ,lately living in Flushing Avenue near Walworth Street, where he leaves a wife and two children in destitute circumstances. His only grown son, and on whom the family depended, is a soldier in Company D,40th(Mozart) Regiment, now fighting the battles of his country in front of Richmond.

Source: Case Files of Approved Pension Applications of Widows and Other Dependents of Civil War Veterans (NARA)      Catherine Higgins (nee Martin), widow of William Higgins and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, applied for a pension on April 11, 1865.They were married at St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 29, 1864 by Rev. P. F. Sheridan. The marriage record states both William and Catherine were born in Ireland. There were no children of this marriage. William Higgins was a Private in Company "F" 69th New York Infantry. He died of Typhoid Pneumonia April 4, 1865 at his residence while on furlough. His furlough states the following personal information; Age 24, 5 ft 9 in. tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. He was a plumber by occupation.
