Francis Higgins enlisted at age 27, as a Private, in Company "G" of the 2nd Regiment Maryland Infantry on May 27, 1864, at Baltimore, Md, for 3 years service. He was mustered in on same day. He was a substitute in place of John A. Barnes. He deserted July 1, 1864. Returned from desertion September 13, 1864. On Jan/Feb 1865 he is listed as absent sick in hospital. Mustered out near Alexandria, Virginia on July 17, 1865.  A letter in his file from the War department dated April 4, 1892 states that the actual name of this soldier is Julian Higdon Brown.

Personal Information: Born Cuba, Occupation given as Sailor, Black eyes, Black hair, Dark complexion, 5 ft 3 in tall.

James Higgins was drafted, at age 24, and was mustered in at Baltimore, Maryland on April 1, 1863 as a Private in Battery "A' Maryland Light Artillery* for a period of 9 months service. He then joined and enrolled on April 10, 1863. Present on all rolls until January 9, 1864 when he was discharged at Culpeper Court House, Virginia because of expiration term of service.
* Battery later designated the 1st Maryland Light Artillery.

He was mustered into  "Old Company" "H" , 8th Maryland Infantry as a Private on the same day for 9 months service. The file notes he had been absent without leave since April 5, 1863. General Hospital at Fairfax Seminary, Va. Has been in hospital in Washington D. C. since May 8, 1864. Back with company as present on Sept/Oct 1864 roll. On Nov/Dec 1864 roll he is listed as Sergeant, it was effective November 27, 1864.Listed as absent on furlough in Baltimore, Md. since April 27, 1865 on Mar/Apr 1865 roll. Mustered out with company at Arlington Heights, Virginia on May 31, 1865.

Joseph M. Higgins joined and enrolled at Hancock, Maryland, as a Private at age 44, on October 1, 1861, in Captain Zeller's Company 1st Virginia Volunteers*. His term of service was 3 years. Is present on all rolls until Sept/Oct 1862 roll where it states he is absent, having been taken prisoner at Harper's Ferry Virginia on September 15, 1862. he was later paroled.
Name appears on a detachment muster roll dated Nov/Dec 1862 at Camp Douglas, Illinois. Is listed on Mar/April 1863 roll as absent sick at Alexandria, Ohio. Is present on Jul/Aug 1863 roll as well as Sep/Oct 1863.
Discharged and mustered out on December 24, 1863. He re-enlisted in Veteran Volunteers on December 25, 1863. Present on roll until Sep/Oct 1864 when he is listed as absent , sick in hospital at Fort Monroe since Sept 24,1864. File states he was attached to hospital October 28,1864 at McDougall U.S.A. Hospital at Fort Schuyler, New York Harbor. Transferred to Fort Wood, Bedloe Island on December 3, 1864. States he is absent sick at Pleasant Valley, Maryland as of February 1865. On June/July 1865 roll is listed as absent sick at Richmond Virginia since June 3, 1865. Died of diarrhea at U. S. General Hospital at Richmond, Virginia on August 6, 1865.

Personal Information from this file: Age 44, 6ft 1/2 inch tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. Born Morgan County, Virginia. By occupation a Farmer.

He died of Catarrh (inflammation of the mucous membranes) in same hospital on February 24, 1864.
