on April 25, 1862 in Company "C", 3rd Delaware Infantry for 3 years
service. He was mustered in on May 15, 1862 at Camp Fisher. On roll
ending October 31, 1862 he is listed as absent without leave. On Nov/Dec
1862 roll he is listed as being in band, having been detailed from June
to September 1862..Another notation in his file states he was discharged
October 1, 1862. A note appears in file, dated April 22, 1889 stating
AWOL charge and notation of discharge have been removed by order of
Secretary of War.

enlisted in Captain Shortledge's Company, 1st Delaware Infantry* as a
Corporal on September 12, 1861. He was 22 years old, He had enrolled and
joined on August 28, 1861 for 3 years service. Promoted to Sergeant on
September 29, 1862. Wounded in action December 13, 1862 at
Fredericksburg, Virginia. Died December 25, 1862 from traumatic tetanus
at Washington, D. C.
* This company subsequently became Company "G" 1st Delaware Infantry.

Mary Ellen Higgins (nee Woody) received a widows pension in 1863 for her
Husband's
Henry H. Higgins service in Company "G" 1st Delaware Infantry of the Union
Army. Her address was given as Wilmington Mercantile Company, Delaware,
another address is given as 213 West 4th Street ,Wilmington, Delaware.
She states they were married June 16, 1859 by the Justice of the Peace
in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Her pension file states her husband
died on December 25,1862 of wounds received in battle December
13,1862.His last rank was reported as a Sergeant. His file further
states he died at Mount Pleasant Hospital, Washington, D. C. and that
his wounds were received in Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Witnesses on her application were Matilda Moody and George Rodney
Higgins.

enlistment on August 28,1861 at Wilmington Delaware for 3 years or war,

notes that he deserted at Loudoun heights, Virginia.
On a note in his file from War Dept. dated April 22, 1889, it states
that the charge of desertion is removed by order of Secretary of War, he
is to be listed as discharged from date of September 17, 1862, as unfit
for military duty.
Civil War pension records show Joseph Higgins applied Aug 17,1892 for an invalid's
pension, in Delaware, for his service in Company "K" 3rd Delaware
