Hugh Higgins - Enlisted September 19, 1861 in Company "H" 2nd Iowa
Cavalry at Iowa City, Iowa. He was discharged because of expiration of
the term of service on September 19, 1864 in the field . He re-enlisted
again in the same organization in the field and served until the close
of the war.
Personal Information : Born in Ireland, age 67 at time of entry into the
home on December 5, 1904. height 5 ft 8 in tall, Fair complexion, gray
eyes, Can not read or write, Catholic, Occupation Laborer, residence
subsequent to discharge was Dumas, Kansas. He was a widower. He died of
cirrhosis of the liver on May 22, 1906. Buried in Plot - P, Row 23,
Grave 16.

(Application # 637975 & Certificate # 924526) on January 31, 1888 for
his service as a private in Company "H" 2nd Iowa Cavalry.

--MURDER IN MISSOURI-
We learn from a letter published in the HAWKEYE that while five members of Company C, First Iowa
Cavalry, were out on foraging expedition on the 27th Ult. in St. Claire County
Missouri, they were fired upon by about twenty rebels in ambush . and three of the
party were killed and one wounded. The killed were William G. Harbach and Josiah Cameron of Burlington
and M. Higgins of Des Moines County. The wounded was A. Stoddard, from West Point, Lee
County, who it is thought will recover. W.A. Clarke alone escaped. He lost his horse and had several balls in his clothing.
