Chris Gerlach, a bright 14 year old boy, succumbed to diphtheria, on Sunday morning last, and was buried in Mt.Olivet Cemetery yesterday morning. The deceased was the son of a poor but very respectable widow of this city and had just entered on a position in Messrs. Whalen Brothers Shoe store. "Chris" was at one time employed in THE NEWS office and was a smart lad. Dr. Franklin B. Smith, who attended the case, did everything in his power to save the boy's life but without avail, the disease being a virulent type. Messrs Shroeder Brothers had charge of the funeral arrangements.
