Lorene Luella Higgins, 94, of Gardner died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Olathe Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1907, in Prowers, CO. Her childhood was spent in Gardner, and she was a Gardner High School graduate. She married Herman F. Higgins June 10, 1926, in Gardner. He was a former Johnson County Commissioner and Johnson County Treasurer. He died Feb. 26, 1990. Following her marriage, she moved to other cities. They returned to Gardner in 1938, and Mrs. Higgins spent the rest of her life here. During World War II, she worked in the Horn's Grocery Store while her brothers served in the military. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner, serving as a Deacon, on the Session and in the Presbyterian Women's Circles. Mrs. Higgins was also a member of the Johnson County Republican Women's Club. She was a loving mother and grandmother and active with her family. An excellent seamstress, she also painted china and ceramics. She was an avid birdwatcher. She and her husband traveled extensively and were members of the Air Streamers Club.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Clifton LeRoy Horn and Eura Luella Myers Horn, and two brothers, Darrell and Ronald Horn.
She is survived by a daughter, Pat Rankin and husband Homer, Gardner; two sisters, Barbara Brown and Carolyn Donovan, both of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Mike and wife Susan Rankin and Melody and husband Joe Gatti; and great-grandsons, Joe and Paul Rankin and John and Tony Gatti.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at First Presbyterian Church, Gardner, with burial in the Gardner Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. before services at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to First Presbyterian Church.
