My name is Carolyn Higgins Koch
My Great- Grandfather was Peter Higgins b. 1837-43 in New York .
He married Phoebe Flesher in 1867 in Chatsworth , IL . They had 7 children: Elizabeth b. 1869, John W. b. 1870, Nellie b.1871, Adelia b. 1873, William J. (my grandfather) b. 1877, James Robert b. 1878 and Charles b. 1885 All the children were born in Illinois. Peter d. 1913 and is buried in Sioux City , Iowa . I have been unable to track down a birth certificate. His death certificate lists his father as being John Higgins born in Ireland and his mother is listed as unknown and born in America (other sources say Ireland ). I can locate Peter in the 1870 census in Livingston County , IL and in the 1880 Census in Ford County , IL and in Sioux City , Iowa in 1900. This is where my knowledge stops and I thought that if I could discover the siblings of Peter then I could try to get some information on Great Great Grandfather John. I hope someone can help me!

Open: Tuesday-Sunday (11:00-5:30)

Opening Date: Mid-June

The purpose of this museum is to acquire, preserve and display the notes and artifacts of the National Banks. The National Banking system played a key role in the financing of the Civil War, and in stabilizing the banking system and provided credit to both the government and the public during the important fifty year period between the Civil War and World War One.
Iowa in particular was well served by the National Banks. The first bank to open business, and for two days the only National Bank in America was the First National bank of Davenport, Charter number 15. 496 National Banks in 300 Iowa Communities issued National Bank Notes during the Period 1863-1935. Many people regard these notes as Americas Commemorative paper money. The Landing of Columbus, the embarkation of the Pilgrims, the signing of the Declaration of Independence and other great events of our history are illustrated on the notes of the first charter period. All of the notes honor the towns, the banks, and many thousands of individuals who played key roles in the development of our country and its resources. We feel fortunate to have this Museum and these great reminders of our heritage.

John Hickman, a leading cataloger and dealer in National Bank Notes has been the Curator since the Museum opened.

The various types and denominations of notes issued by the National Banks are displayed here, as well as several representative notes from the States, Territories, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The most complete collection of 1902 Red Seal Notes, many of them number one notes, are also featured. In the center of the room a platform is reserved for the eventual acquisition of a printing press. Presently a glass case displays artifacts of the National Banks.

MISSOURI ROOM

Several rare uncut sheets, both large and small size
notes are displayed in this room. The most complete
collection of the notes issued by the banks of
Missouri are arranged alphabetically, by town, around the walls.

MINNESOTA ROOM

Many rare and interesting notes from the state of
Minnesota are displayed in this room. The number one
$1.00 note from the First National Bank of Northfield,
the banked robbed by the James brothers, and the only
known note from Sleepy Eye Lake is featured.

BOTH IOWA ROOMS

These two rooms contain the most complete state
collection of National bank notes ever assembled from
a major state. 278 different Iowa towns are
represented from all 99 Iowa counties. Many of these
notes are the only notes known to exist and are of the
finest condition obtainable.

William R  Higgins, Jr.
Mr. Higgins grew up in Clay and Dickinson Counties and served as Mayor of Okoboji for fourteen years, from 1960 to 1974. A collector since his early youth, for thirty years he collected crowns of the world. When his collection was sold in three complete auctions in 1973 and 1974, it was the largest such collection in private hands in the world. Over 7,000 different silver dollar size coins were sold at auction. The proceeds of these sales made this museum possible. This printing press is on loan to the Higgins Museum for exhibit purposes from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This press was obtained through the courtesy of President Ronald Reagan.

ISRAEL HIGGINS

Iowa owes her high rank among the states to her farms more than to any other cause. Her preeminence is as an agricultural and not as a manufacturing state, and the high character of her citizens is largely due to the fact that the most of them received the early training in character and in the practical work of 1'ife which is best obtained on the farm. On the farm the subject was born and there he spent the greater portion of his life and the later portion either in handling the produce of farms or in selling farming lands, so that his life has throughout been connected with the farms.
Israel Higgins was born in Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, January 9, 1835, the son of Israel and Rebecca (Taylor) Higgins. who were both natives of New Jersey, and here spent the days of their lives. Israel Higgins, Sr., was a farmer and a carder by trade, and also added to his income by acting as auctioneer. In politics he was a Democrat. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church. He died in 1865. his wife in 1847.
Israel Higgins, Jr., and one sister are the only living members of a family which consisted of four sons and three daughters. He was reared on the farm and attended the common schools. In 1856 he came to Cordovia, Rock Island county, Illinois, and in the fall of the same year he came to Camanche and worked for Butcher & Daily, general merchants and grain dealers, and remained with them for about four years and then bought one hundred twenty acres of land and began to farm. In 1864 he went into the grain dealing business at Remsa, about one and one-half miles east of Malone, Iowa, and after nine years there he went to Malone and was a grain dealer there for some time. There he also carried on a mercantile business, and was postmaster and lived there twenty years. In 1887 he came to DeWitt, Iowa, and entered business as a stock and grain dealer. He continued in this business until 1901, when he went into the real estate business, continuing in that until recently, when he retired. In his various business enterprises he has displayed much ability and has found them very profitable. He is a charter member of the Farmers and Citizens' Bank, and a director in the First National Bank and in the Farmers and Citizens' Savings Bank. In politics he is a Republican and has been justice of the peace and township trustee, and for nine years city alderman. He is a Mason and attends the Congregational church.
Mr. Higgins was married on October 20, 1859, to Hannah Daniels, of West Virginia, who has borne to him two children, J. M., a Pullman car conductor, and Mary Alice, wife of W. W. McCredie, of Vancouver, Washington, now representing his district in the United States Congress.

Mr. Higgins has made many acquaintances in the course of his dealings in this county, and is well thought of among them.

Warren Higgins

Success is determined by one's ability to recognize opportunity and to pursue this with a resolute , unflagging energy. It results from continued labor, and the man who thus accomplishes his purpose usually becomes an important factor in the business circles in the community with which he is connected. Through such means Mr. Higgins of Keswick has attained a leading place among the representative men of Keokuk County, and his well spent and honorable life commands the respect of all who know him. Mr. Higgins was born in Knox County ,Ohio, on the 17th of February 1825 , a son of Myrick and Hannah (Davis) Higgins, natives of Vermont and Virginia respectively. His paternal grandfather was Josiah Higgins, who was born in America of Irish ancestry on the paternal side and of Welsh and German on the maternal side.
During his boyhood Myrick Higgins  accompanied his parents on their removal to Ohio, where he was reared, and he continued to make his home in Washington and Knox counties, that state, for many years, his attention being devoted to farming. In 1853 he came to Iowa and spent his last days in Keokuk County, where he died at the ripe old age of eighty seven years. During his residence in Ohio he held membership in the baptist church, and in politics he supported first the Whig and later the Republican parties, taking quite an active part in local affairs and holding several township offices. His wife died in the seventy eight year of her age. Her people were also settlers in Washington and Knox Counties, Ohio, Her father being Jacob Davis . The subject of this review is the second son and fourth child in the family of seven children, consisting of three sons and four daughters, all of which reached manhood and womanhood. He has one sister still living- Mrs. Elizabeth Otis, a resident of Olympia Washington.
Warren Higgins spent the first nine years of his life in the county of his nativity and then removed with his parents to Marion County Ohio, where he grew to manhood, his education be obtained in a little log schoolhouse in that county, with its slab seats and a writing desk, made by a board laid upon pins driven into the wall.
On attaining majority he began life for himself, working as a farm hand for three years. In 1850 Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Marcia Rubins, who was born in Richland County, Ohio, but was reared in Marion County, whither she removed with her parents when she was four years old. By this union were born four children, three sons and one daughter, namely; Hale; Joseph R.; Effie. the widow of Hallick Messenger; and Delano, who now has charge of the old home farm. After his marriage Mr. Higgins continued to reside in Marion County, Ohio until 1852,when he sold his property there , and in the fall of that year came to Keokuk County, Iowa, locating on a farm in Adams Township, where he purchased seven hundred and twenty acres of land for three dollars an acre. This he divided with his brother-in-law Henry C. Otis. To the cultivation and improvement of this farm he devoted his energies until the youngest son, Delano, took charge of the same, and he removed to Keswick, where he has made his home since 1894,having erected there a beautiful residence. On the organization of the Keswick Savings Bank he became one of its stockholders and directors and the following year he was made President, in which capacity he served five years. He is also a stockholder in the Sigourney State Bank and still is the owner of the old homestead farm, consisting of about seven hundred acres, which is under a high state of cultivation and well improved. Politically Mr. Higgins was a Whig in early life, but on the organization of the Republican party, he joined its ranks and has since been a staunch supporter of that great political party. He has held local offices, such as that of township trustee, and as a public spirited and progressive citizen has borne a very important part in the development and upbuilding of his adopted county. He spent more than one thousand dollars to assist in bringing the railroad to this county and has ever contributed to those enterprises which he believed would prove of public benefit or in any way would advance the general welfare. As a businessman he has met with marked success in most of his undertakings, and although he started off in life with no capital, he is today one of the most prosperous and successful citizens of his part of the county. Wherever known he is held in high regard and as an honored pioneer and highly respected citizen. He is certainly deserving of honorable mention in the history of Keokuk County.

- Biography -
Floyd Halleck Higgins was born on May 15, 1886, in Keokuk, Iowa. After graduating from Iowa State College in Ames, he moved to Chicago and
western Canada to work in a variety of public relations positions including Director of Public Relations, National Association of Farm Equipment
Manufacturers (1922-1926). Higgins moved to California in 1927 where he became the News Editor for Caterpillar Tractor Company. He immediately found that farm
machinery history "was gathered by each company's ad men when they needed to get up something for a 'special number' of some publication in which its ads
appeared." In self defense, Higgins began collecting materials relating to the origins of combines and tractors but his interests expanded to include all forms
of farm mechanization. In 1933, Caterpillar moved its corporate headquarters to Peoria, Illinois. Higgins chose to stay in California where he worked as a
free-lance writer. His articles appeared in Pacific Rural Press , Farm Implement News, Diesel Progress, Rice Journal , and other agricultural journals. He used every opportunity to interview "the men who were there" and create an historical record supported by material in his ever-growing collection.
In 1959, Higgins sold his collection of more than ninety file cabinet drawers of research materials, to the University of California, Davis.
The University Library hired him to remain the curator of the collection, a position he held until 1972 when ill health forced him to retire. He died on February 28, 1975.

HIGGINS

Harlan, Edgar Rubey. A Narrative History of the People of Iowa. Vol. IV. Chicago: American Historical Society, 1931

p. 133

William F  Higgins, a popular business man of Waterloo, is a native of Iowa and was born on a farm in Carleton Township of Tama County, where his people were early settlers. His father was Thomas Higgins, a native of Whiteside County, Illinois, and his grandfather, Michael Higgins, was born in County Cork, Ireland, as was the only member of his family to come to America, locating in Whiteside County, where he bought a farm. Thomas Higgins lived in Whiteside County until 1864, when he came out to Iowa and settled in Tama County. At that time a railroad was in process of construction, but it was never completed, and after putting in a summer working for the construction company he had to go without his pay for his labor. He then became a farmer in Carleton Township, and for several years devoted his labors to his land. After leasing his farm he moved to Garwin, where he is now living retired. He married Harriet Smith, who was born in Iowa. Her father, John Smith, was a native of Germany. He came to the United States when a young man, in 1847 returned to his native land, and in 1849 came again to this country and joined a company that started in a covered wagon across the plains for California. He was quite successful in his search for the precious metal on the Pacific Coast and after returning east bought 320 acres of Government land in Tama County, Iowa, at $1.25 an acre. Tama County, like other counties in Western Iowa, was then sparsely settled and he was among the pioneers in starting development. He improved 240 acres, erected good buildings and lived there until his death at the age of eighty-one. Thomas Higgins and wife reared a family of five children: William F.; Margaret, who married Olin Ruff of Tama County, Iowa; Walter; Roy; and Ruth, who married Ralph Irons, of Tama County. William F. Higgins was born February 25, 1881, and grew up on the home farm in Tama County, was educated in rural schools and did his share of farm work. History of Crawford County, Iowa...by F. W. Meyers. 2 vols. Chicago: S. J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1911.

A productive farm of one hundred and twenty acres in Willow township yields gratifying returns for the labor of John W. Higgins. He was born on the place where he now lives, January 5, 1884, a son of John and Mary (Gaynor) Higgins. The father was born in Ireland and came to the United States at the age of eighteen. He spent nine years in Chicago and then, having decided to devote his attention to agricultural pursuits, located in Crawford county, Iowa, upon a tract of eighty acres on section 26, Willow township. He improved his farm and then disposed of it, purchasing one hundred and sixty acres on section 18, where he lived for twenty-eight years. He cultivated the soil, planted trees and made the farm one of the most attractive properties in the locality. In 1908 he removed to Ute, Iowa, where he now lives retired. The mother of our subject was also born in Ireland and was married to Mr. Higgins at Chicago. She now enjoys with him the fruits of many years of labor. There were seven children in the family, six of whom are now living, namely: Mary, who is at home; Margaret, the wife of Dan Hartigan, who lives near Ute; Johannah, who married Patrick Devin and is now living on part of the home farm; Anna and Lizzie, both of whom are at home; and John W., of this review. Educated in the district schools of Willow township John W. Higgins early displayed a power of application to his studies which gave good evidence of his mental ability and his desire to make the most of opportunities in life. He continued at home until twenty years of age and then went to Chicago, where he became connected with the wholesale department of Carson, Pirie, Scott & Company. However, he yielded to an irresistible desire to return to agricultural pursuits and accordingly came to Crawford county and began farming on his own account on sections 27 and 28, Willow township. After two years he went to Stanley county, South Dakota and settled upon a homestead but did not prove up on it, lacking from October until the following March. Returning to Crawford county, where conditions are much more favorable than he found them in South Dakota, he farmed the Shipley place for one year and then removed to his father's farm, where he has since resided. He is now the owner of one hundred and twenty acres of good land, which he has cultivated with marked success.
On the 12th of February, 1907, Mr. Higgins was united in marriage to Miss Pearl Ball, a native of Monona county, Iowa, and they have two children, Daniel and Laverne. Although Mr. Higgins is only twenty-seven years of age he has made an excellent start in business and ranks as one of the enterprising and progressive farmers of his township. His success is mainly due to his interest in his work and an honorable ambition to accomplish what he undertakes regardless of the time or labor involved. His political allegiance is given to the democratic party, in whose principles he is a firm believer. He is a strong advocate of education and has served as a member of the school board. Fraternally he is identified with the camp of Modern Woodmen of America at Ute, and he and his estimable wife are members of the Catholic church in whose faith they were reared.
