ancestor come from? Ireland (?)
Comments:
My grandfather was Ambry Glenn Higgins. He was born in Holly Springs GA @ 1880. His father was Frank G. Higgins and his mother was Rutha Rebecca Higgins. His father's brother was named William Higgins (wife Martha and daughters Lucy and Fannie) His brothers were named Osgood and Kellor. He married Margaret Melissa (Leila) Cline who was from Canton, Ga. I cannot find any reference to their origins except that they MIGHT have come from Ireland. I hope because of the somewhat unusual names (Ambry, Osgood, Kellor & Rutha) that someone might be more familiar with the family. Any help would be appreciated.

Wiley M. Higgins, aged 60 years, died Thursday morning at his residence, 525 Whitehall St., after a short illness. The funeral services were held from the chapel of Awtry & Lowndes, and the body was sent to Buffalo, Ala., for interment in the family burial ground. Mr. Higgins was with Maier & Berkele. Whitehall St., for a number of years as head-watchmaker. Before coming to Atlanta he was in business in Alabama, and on coming to Atlanta he was with the Charles Crankshaw Jewelry Co., later going to Maier & Berkele.

Wiley Grover Higgins

I came across your excellent website in my research of Wiley Grover Higgins, b. 1799 probably in S.C. I wonder if there is an awareness among his descendants that he was one of the great gunsmiths in America during the 1820-50 period? If there is an interest, I will provide more information about him as a gunsmith. My interest is as a collector and researcher of American Longrifles and a particular devotee of Higgins' work. It would be helpful in my research to hear from Higgins descendants who have knowledge about Wiley Grover Higgins and his work as a gunsmith.

Mrs. Winnie Higgins

She was a daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Gammill and was born in Harris County, Ga., and there resided until the death of her parents in 1892, when she came into our family, as she was a sister of my wife, and made our home her home until July 1900 when she became the second wife of the late S. G. Higgins a well-known and highly respected citizen of Chambers County. This identified her with one of the best families in the country, and with him she lived happily until his death in 1907, when she left her home and again became a member of our family until her death, which occurred last Friday evening at 6 o’clock, June 11, 1909. This last illness lasted 7 weeks during which time all was done for her by physicians and friends that could be done, but she had run her race and must go “the way of all the earth.” She died at the age of 75 and was buried by the side of her husband in the Higgins Cemetery, near Five Points, Chambers County, Ala., in the presence of a goodly number of friends and relatives. Four of the five surviving step-children gathered around her casket and with tears manifested that death had severed a strong tie that existed between them. When quite young she made a profession of religion and died a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Mt. Hickory, Chambers County. Twice during her last illness she became perfectly happy, and with her weak voice, gave praises to God to whom she has gone and in whom her spirit rests until the resurrection morn, when soul and body will be reunited and housed in the paradise of God. We take this occasion to extend to our neighbors and friends our hearty thanks for their faithful service and tender sympathy during our trouble. J. T. Satterwhite

(Per “Survey of Cemeteries in Chambers County, Alabama” there is a tombstone in the Higgins Family Cemetery that reads: “Mrs. Winnie Higgins, wife of S. G. Higgins, Jan. 25, 1834 – Jan. 25, 1909 NOTE: the death date should be June 11, 1909. gb She is buried beside her husband and his first wife.)

Harold Leroy Higgins Sr

Harold Leroy Higgins Sr. age 79 of Washington, died on Jan. 14, 2008. He was born in Gwinnett County on July 7, 1928 to the late Leonard Higgins and the late Jessie Jones Higgins. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Rose Ida Sutterfield Higgins.
Surviving are: sons: Harold Higgins Jr of Texas, Floyd Higgins of Washington, Gene Higgins of Alabama, Richard Higgins of Franklin, Dale Higgins of Elkmonk, AL, and Benjamin Higgins of Griffin; daughters: Patti Lindsey of Ringgold, Rose Marie Casper of Covington, Libby Deaton of Monroe, Linda Sargent of Monroe, and Brenda Bloomer of Las Vegas, NV; sisters: Dale Wilson of Canton and Martha Lawrence of Mayesville; 23 Grandchildren and 26 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Friday Jan. 18 at 11a.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Hill Haven Cemetery.
Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. of Monroe was in charge of arrangements.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at the Alta Vista Cemetery for George B. (Benny) Higgins, age 91, of Gainesville. The Rev. Jack Pierce will officiate. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery. Mr. Higgins died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007. 

Born in Tennessee, Mr. Higgins had lived in Hall County for a number of years. He was the son of the late George Bendol and Willie Mayfield Higgins. Mr. Higgins served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith. He is preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne P. Higgins; a daughter, Pamela Martin; and a son, Timothy Higgins. 

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Carol Higgins, Monroe, Dan and Patsy Mitchell, Gervas, Ore., Kip and Claudia Pirkle, Lexington, Va., and Robert and Tania Pirkle, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Wil Owen, Gainesville; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association. Mason & Ward Funeral Home, Gainesville

Mrs. Frances Perryman Higgins, 83, of Dalton, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton for 59 years and a charter member of the Dalton Junior Women's Club. She was a Gray Lady at Hamilton Memorial Hospital and a retiree from General Telephone Co. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis J Higgins Sr.
Mrs. Higgins is survived by her children, Lewis J. Higgins Jr. and daughter-in-law Ronnie of Spartanburg, S.C.; Andrea H. Perry and son-in-law Ed Perry of Nashville, Ga.; Elinor H. Townsend and son-in-law Steve Townsend Sr. of Dalton; and Melinda H. Ledbetter and son-in-law Steve Ledbetter Sr. of Rome; grandchildren, Ed Perry Jr., Carrie Ann Perry Turner, Will Perry, Steve Townsend Jr., Kerry T. Smith, Steve Ledbetter Jr., Jenny L. Rhodes, Jonathan Ledbetter; and six great-grandchildren.
Services are today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in Whitfield Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 10 to 11 a.m. Love Funeral Home, 1402 N. Thornton Ave, Dalton, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Ann Higgins, 66, of 4619 Hudson River Church Road, died Saturday, March 3, 2001.

A native of Athens, Ohio, Mrs. Higgins was a daughter of the late Walter and Dorothy Carsey Graham, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie Sewell. She was employed with Wal-Mart.

Survivors include her husband, James Curtis Higgins; a daughter, Linda Susan Morrison, Ila; a son, Billy Sewell, Florida; a brother, Pearl Graham, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren
