Our earliest known Lenox ancestor was Ambrose Lenox, born about 1822 in Kentucky and died in approximately February of 1853 in Crawford Co., Missouri. Ambrose, possibly, though this is unproven, was the son of George Lenox and Patsy Christy. George was the son of William Lenox and Mary ("Polly") Wilson, and grandson of Charles Lenox (born 1754 in Glasgow, Scotland), an early emigrant to Kentucky. There were many Lenox family members in Crawford, Phelps, and Dent counties, Missouri, where Ambrose Lenox and his family lived and it is most probable that he is of that family. Ambrose first appears in the records when he marries Hester Armitage on 11 December 1845 in Crawford Co., Missouri. He was Hester's fourth husband. She was married to (1) William Kidwell, (2) William Pace, (3) Moses Phillips, and (4) Ambrose Lenox. Each husband died. Ambrose was approximately 12 or 14 years younger than Hester. He appears in the 1850 census of Crawford Co., Missouri, and he purchased 80 acres of land in 1851 from Lyle and Lucinda Singleton in Crawford Co. In January of 1853 he and his wife Hester sold the to Benjamin Cooksey. On March 1, 1853, Judge Lyle Singleton appointed Hester Lenox to be administrator of Ambrose's estate.

The children of Ambrose and Hester Lenox are as follows:

  1. George Anson Lenox, born about 1846 in Missouri, said to have died in the Civil War as a teenager.
  2. Mary Catherine Lenox, born 5 February 1848 in Crawford co., Missouri and died on 16 November 1914 in Dent Co., Missouri. She was married to Michael Wolfe Jr. on 29 November 1866 in Dent Co.
