Henry A. Strode
First President of Clemson University, South Carolina, & Founder of Kenmore School

Mr. George B. Strode, wrote the following in an e-mail message to Joanne Yates, on March 6, 2003:

[about three years ago]...on a visit to Clemson, I found out that they had a portrait of H. A. Strode that had been comissioned by The Board of Trustees in the 1890s. Unfortunately it had been severely damaged along with the portraits of the second and third Presidents of the college. They had been lost for years in the back of a closet in one of the buildings. They agreed to allow me to arrange for a restoration of the portrait and a frame. The original frame was missing.

I sent the portrait to New York for restoration. All the cousins kicked in to pay for the restoration and frame which came to about $4,000. We presented the portrait to Clemson that weekend. They did a wonderful presentation on H. A. Strode's time at Clemson. The portrait now hangs in Strode tower. The picture of H. A. Strode hung at one time I believe in the president's office at Clemson. The college has produced a book on the Presidents of Clemson....

George
