Mamie was the daughter of Forrest Jay Mitchell, Sr. and Sara Isabelle Rose, both of Richmond.

She was employed as a proof reader for F. J. Mitchell Printing, Corp., for many years. She also worked as a proof reader for many other publishers in Richmond, Virginia.

Mamie was very fond of birds and animals. She particularly loved her cats and fed wild birds of all kinds.
