Ruth Cook Manley - Apr 11, 2002
(Elias Widener) He was in the Civil War. He was captured by the Yankees while swimming across a river and spent time in a Yankee prison- so I have been told.

If Ruth Cook Manley is correct, it would explain why he was absent after the battle. Unfortunately, the Archives files have no mention of capture. It might be they've been lost, were never recorded, or are misfiled due to misspelling of name

Elias Widener was enlisted on June 28th, 1864, into the 6th Battalion Virginia Reserves, also known as 13th Battalion Va Reserves and Smith's Battalion Va Reserves. He served as a private in Company F through the summer until the Battle of Saltville, where he was wounded on October 2nd, 1864. Apparently, either the wound was severe enough, or he simply had enough, Elias didn't return to duty afterwards and is listed as a deserter on January 25th, 1865.

Roy Widener - Sep 22, 2006 Viewers | Reply to this item Granddad David and Grandma Rachel were my grandparents on Dad's side. GM Rachel, (B 26 Feb 1852) died on 14 Feb 1915,( 8 years before I was borne) and uncle Felix, uncle Will's Dad, were children of Uncle Elis and Aunt Mary "Polly" Rosenbaum.GD David and GM Rachel were Married on 24 Aug 1985 and had 6 children. Uncle Clayton was born in 1887 but died in 1906. the others were A Evelyn "Evie", Bertha, Dad,Ruth and Ada.GD David was the son of Nelson Widener and Rachel Thomas and was born on 4 March 1855an died on 4 Oct 1937.I was the middle of Dad and Mama's three children but by far GD's favorite( I wonder why). My first recollection of GD was when I was no more than 2years old. His bed was in our front or living room, which was the only room except the kitchen that had any heat, and as the baby I slept with him in a 3/4 bed.The back , or one story part of the house was one big room with a very large fire place at the end which served as the kitchen and dining room's. I can still see my self coming into the dinning room after the others were seated ,crawling up on his knee and drinking very sweet an cream laced coffee from his saucer and the look of disapproval of Mama. I remember Grandad as being a very quiet and patient man. I don't recall that he ever lost his temper or tried to interfere with Dad' running of the farm or Mama's running of the house, except sometimes running interference for me which did not work.He like, My Dad, always had a pipe in his mouth and he smoked Velvet tobacco. He was not in good health in his latter years but I don't recall him ever complaining. He was a good friend and I missed him a lot. There is a lot more that I could say about this gentle man but I have used my allotted space.
