Obituary of Thomas Ira DeBusk, Jr.

Thomas Ira Debusk Jr., of Roanoke, passed away September 13, 2013, at 88 years of age. He was born on November 13, 1924, in Goode (Bedford County), a son of the late Minnie Whitten and Thomas Ira DeBusk. He was a long time member of Cave Spring Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Council for over 40 years. He retired from the Norfolk Southern Corporation after 43 years of service beginning with N & W in 1942. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator-gunner aboard a B-17 Bomber. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elizabeth Ann Cawthorne DeBusk; sons, William R. DeBusk and his wife, Laura, of Roanoke, Thomas I. Debusk III, and his wife, Carol, of Stuart, a grandson, Christopher R. DeBusk and his wife, Laura and their daughters, his precious great-granddaughters, Kathryn and Claire DeBusk, of Glen Allen; a brother, Clinton E. DeBusk, of Northern Virginia; and brother-in-law, Fred Cawthorne and wife, Mary Ester, of Richmond. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by two infant sisters, Martha Eunice and Sarah Elizabeth DeBusk. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2013, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue. Pastor Rick Elmore and Pastor Pete Schemm will officiate. Private family interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 1 p.m. Sunday until service time at 3 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts or memorials be made to Cave Spring Baptist Church, 4873 Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24018. The family would also like to acknowledge Good Samaritan Hospice and Gentle Shepherd Hospice, the staff at Park Oak Grove and South Roanoke Nursing Home. Arrangements by Oakey's South Chapel.
