Elijah DeBusk and Sarah Catherine Ball
Elijah DeBusk and Sarah Catherine Ball

Elijah DeBusk, son of Elias DeBusk and Martha Edmondson, was born 25 Jan 1847 in Washington County, Virginia and died 09 Aug 1924 in Cross Plains, Callahan County, Texas. Sarah Catherine Ball (daughter of Tillman Dixon Ball and Elizabeth Bales) was born 16 Nov 1851 in Lee County, Virginia and died 03 Jan 1947 in Cross Plains, Callahan County, Texas. They were married 21 Sep 1868 in Lee County, Virginia. They are both buried in Cross Cut Cemetery, Brown County, Texas. They arrived in Collin County, Texas from Lee County, Virginia in 1868 and in 1875 moved to Brown County, Texas. They settled on the J.L. Williams quarter of a league on Turkey Creek. He and his father enlisted 3 October 1862 in Lee County, Virginia with Company H, 27th Battalion Virginia Mounted Rifles, 25th Virginia Cavalry. Records have him killed at Yellow Creek, Virginia on 5 December 1862. The Elijah that died was probably the son of Palser DeBusk that died around this time. Elijah was paroled 28 April 1865 at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky by Colonel William Y. Dillard of the 34th Kentucky Infantry of the Union Army. Elijah's wife Sarah was granted a pension for Civil War veterans by the State of Texas, Pension Number A 49122. They lived in a two story house north of the Cross Cut Cemetery, Brown County, Texas. The house was later sold and moved to a site off Highway 36 between Cross Plains and Abilene. The barn still stands and is being used by Troy Marcel Coleman and Aleta Muriel Chambers. They still own a portion of the original place. With a lot of hard work and money that he made leasing his land he took a trip around Texas looking for land to purchase. His brother William Andrew DeBusk accompanied him. When they went to the Lubbock County, Texas area around 1897 there was only one store which was located on the Yellow House Canyon that was formed by the North Fork of the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River. William Andrew DeBusk did not think much of the area and felt that there would be no protection for his cattle during the winter. Elijah bought land around Idalou and gave a farm to each of his children. He returned home with a sack of soil from the area.  See his Obituary
