W.H. Potter Fatally Injured By a Train
William H. Potter, Civil War veteran, was fatally injured at the B. & O. station about 7:40 a.m. Thursday, by being struck by a double header west bound freight train. He was coming from his home up the Burnsville road over to town and from the foot of Bell avenue cut up across the play grounds to the depot, where a semi public crossing is used by those coming that way.
Apparently his mind was centered upon other matters and he failed to notice the train approaching. Others saw his danger and tried to warn him, but without avail. He was almost over the track when struck and was thrown aside several feet. His right was broken, chest crushed and a hole was cut in his side. H.R. Blayney. H.K. Bell and others ran to his aid. Drs. J.N. Sprowls, and C.C. Cracraft. B. & O. physicians, were summoned. The injuries were found to be fatal and he died about one and a half hours later.
Mr. Potter was about 75 years of age, and a native of West Finley township.
Much of his life was spent at Good Intent. He was married to Miss Sarah Wolfe, sister of C.C. Wolfe, of this place. He served in Company K, Sixteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and proved a good soldier for the _____ cause. He followed farming. For many years he was a member of Windy Gap Presbyterian church. To his close friends he was known as "Bill" Potter and to all he was of that jovial disposition which wins warm friendships. He was a member of Patterson Jobes Post No 535, G.A.R., and one of its most active members. His death takes away another of the rapidly thinning roll.
Mr. Potter's death is deplored by many. His family is one of the prominent, and best known of the community. He came to Claysville about three years ago, and had spent the winter in Wheeling, having only returned about two weeks since. He leaves his wife, one daughter and three sons,?? Mrs. Jennie Burt, of Swissdale, Pa.; Oscar Potter, of West Alexander; Allen Potter, of Troupe, Texas, (where the deceased spent several months last year), and Chris Potter, in Louisiana. Also by three sisters and three brothers??Mrs. J.B. Ackley, West Finley; Mrs. T.A. Stout, and Mrs. H.P. Danley, Claysville; Pet Potter, of Washington, Jennie Potter, of Dubesque, Col., and John Potter, in Illinois.
Funeral services in the home this afternoon at one o'clock, The remains will be taken to Wheeling on the three o'clock train for interment.
