[NI7673] For now I am assuming this is the son of Stotin Potter and Margaret Supler. He lived next to Samuel and Jane Potter in the 1860 census, and a woman named Margaret Potter, aged 73 lived in his home that year. She also lived with him in 1850. No POB was listed in either census for her.

Quite by accident I came across the Hendrick Sutphin marriage bond, dated 17 Dec 1788. Transcription follows:
Know all men by those present that We Hendrick Sutfin & William Sutfin of Bedford County are held firmly bound unto Edmund Randolph Esquire Governor's Chief Magistrate of the State of Virginia in the sum of Fifty pounds current money of Virginia to which payment will truly be made to the said Edmund Randolph or to his successors. We bind ourselves & each of us own & each of our Joint & Several Heirs Exos & adjure firmly by these present Sealed with our seals & dates this 17th day of Dec 1788.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had & solumnized between the above bound Hendrick Sutfin and Rachel Owen. Now if there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then the obligation to be void else to remain in full force & virtue.
Signed Sealed in presence of} Hendrick {(X)his mark} Sutphin
William Sutphin
-------------------------------------------------------------
We do hereby sartify that we have no objection against Hendrick Sutfin an our daught Rachel Owen being joined in wedlock together -- December 17, 1788.

From a publication of the Bedford County Historical Society, Owen Owen was held as a Tory prisoner in New London, the original county seat. Mary Owen as signed above, I'm supposing to be his wife. Since William Sutphin pledged his support for this marriage, I'm beginning to wonder if Alsey (William's Wife) may have also been one of Owen Owen's daughters.

I've spent the past 3 years compiling a database of all the people who lived in Carroll from about 1800 to the 1920's. Although I'm still adding to it, it now includes over 52,000 people. My goal is to donate it to the Carroll Genealogical Society where it can be added to (and corrected, I'm sure) to link all Carroll inhabitants together. I plan to make the donation after I retire next October.
