[NI2751] John Groomes fought in the Civil War from 1862-1866. When he returned to Columbiana County, he went to work for the County Home in Centre Township as a farmer. In 1870 John married Maggie Orr. The two probably continued to work at the County Home. She had been employed there as a housekeeper. By the 1880 federal census, John had been promoted to superintendent of the County Home.
