Port Royal Times obituary, February 13, 1890

DEATH OF WM. MILLIKEN

William Milliken, whose death was recorded a week ago, was a son of Colonel John Milliken, whose family was among the pioneer settlers of the Tuscarora Valley, a family of which two sisters now survive, Mrs. Millie Beale, of Bealetown, and Mrs. Jane Beale, of Earlville, La Salle county, Illinois. His, William's, mother was Isabella Bartley, an only child, and a granddaughter of Colonel William Chambers, the founder of Chambersburg.

Blessed with sufficient of this world's goods, the subject of this sketch on the death of his parents, kept the old home farm, and being quiet, though kind and sociable in his tastes, lived an exemplary life among the old schoolmates and friends of his childhood, returning their friendship all through his days, as the tears shed over his cold form abundantly testified.

Having been elected president of the Indian Mound Harvest Home Association at its organization, he served with such acceptance that he was annually re-elected and held that office at his death.

His wife, a daughter of William Ewing, was devoted to him, and with five sons, Charles, Herbert, Nevin, Franklin and James, are left to mourn their loss and a home made desolate.

Mrs. Mary Caldwell, of Milton, a sister, arrived at his bedside on Friday morning, and when death called was by him to bid him farewell. She with Mattie Book, another sister, who had been with him for a time and James L., of Bealetown, a brother, who had visited him constantly during his illness, were the only members of his father's family who could reach here in time to follow his form to the grave, as the two remaining brothers had gone to the far west many years ago.

The sermon was preached by Rev. W. H. Stevens, of Port Royal, and was a masterly effort from the words "The day of a man's death is better than the day of his birth." It carried to sorrowing ones the needed consolation, and taught the living--to whom it was addressed that the grand old hymn which was sung told truly why the day of death was the better day.

All having taken a last look, the carriers J. N. Pomeroy, L. J. Barton, Jno P. Kelly, John Bryner, Joseph Williams and Franklin Swartz bore their sad burden to the waiting hearse and followed by mourning friends. A long line of carriages slowly wended their way to the Academia cemetery, received there by a gathered number, and the solemn service concluded with the beautiful burial service.

He will not be lonely or alone in the spirit land, for many of his own kindred and friends have preceded him, as the monuments and tombstones amid which he was laid testifu, and time says others are following slowly but surely.

A FRIEND.

The Miltonian obituary, Milton, PA, June 24, 1892

Death of J. A. Milliken, Esq.

J. Anderson Milliken, Esq., died at Wellington, Sumner Co. Kansas, May 29, 1892, from injuries received in the great cyclone, which swept through that place the day before, and without a moments warning destroyed his home and all its contents, together with hundreds of others that lay in its path of devastation.

The deceased was formerly a resident of Academia, Juniata county, and served one term as District Attorney of this county. He went to Wellington about twenty years ago to practice law, but after a few years he gave up his profession on account of ill health, having lost the entire use of his right arm, and partially of his left also. He then purchased a farm in the suburbs of the town. Having a taste for rural life, he moved thither and managed the farming, when his health would permit until so suddenly and unexpectedly called home by the all wise Heavenly Father, whom he so faithfully trusted in his many severe and trying attacks of rheumatic suffering.

He was aged about 54 years and leaves a wife and two daughters, who were seriously injured in the same tornado, one daughter being blown a quarter of a mile from home among the flying debris, and yet fortunate enough to escape with a broken wrist, while her sister was severely cut on the head and face.
-Port Royal Times.
Deceased was a brother to Mrs. Joseph Cadwell of this place, and graduated from college in the same class and was a room mate of the lamented C. Bruce Watson, of Milton.
