Nettie Milligan

Little is known of Nettie Milligan. There are no known surviving pictures. She was born in 1851 in Lennox & Addington County, Ontario, Canada. In 1875 at age 25 she was a housekeeper in Phelps, Ontario County. After their father died in 1872, it appears that she took care of her youngest brother Frank as he was living with her at the farm of Nelson Roberts. In 1901-03 she is listed as a seamstress, living at 135 Merrimac Street in Rochester. From 1910-1912 she lived at 102 State Street. She died on January 6, 1931 at her home at 330 Roxborough Street in Rochester.

One of the most remarkable things about Nettie is that she had the forethought in 1920 to buy four plots in Riverside Cemetery for the four remaining children of William and Isabelle. In addition, she purchased a monument detailing the family history in a neat, precise way decades before computers. Her older sister, Martha, was the first to be buried in the family plot. Nettie herself was next, and her youngest brother Frank was third. Her second youngest brother, Augustus, was supposed to have been buried in the fourth grave, but his final resting place has never been found. In 1938, Nellie's greatnephew Bobby Milligan was buried there.
