Elizabeth Milligan

Elizabeth Milligan was born in April 1845 and married Ephraim in 1868. Little is known about her early life other than she belonged to the First Universalist Church. If you have any pictures of Elizabeth, I would like to put them on this site. Please email me. Elizabeth and Ephraim lived at 661 North St. Paul Street in 1884 before moving to 6 Selye Terrace. The City of Rochester renumbered Selye Terrace. According to the 1910 US Census she and her children were living at 40 Selye Terrace. At the time of her death, she was living with Frederick's family at 51 Chandler Street.

Elizabeth was involved with the Woman's Saturday Club, a literary group formed in October 1890 with other women from the First Universalist Church. The group met every other week, initially in the church parlors and then later on at different member's homes. In 1894 she was the Secretary of the club and presented a study on Germany. It was through this organization that Elizabeth helped plan at least two birthday parties for Susan B. Anthony (1897 and 1898).

According to her obituary from the May 2, 1920 Democrat & Chronicle:

"Mrs. Elizabeth Milligan, widow of Ephraim J. Milligan, died yesterday afternoon at her home at 51 Chandler Street after an illness of nearly three months. Until recent years, when poor health forbade, Mrs. Milligan took great interest in the news of the day, and was at one time an active member of the Woman Suffrage Association and the Woman's Saturday Club, and was president of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union. Her papers on subjects under discussion at the meetings of those bodies always brought out a large and appreciative audience. She was a member of First Universalist Church, having belonged to that denomination from early youth, and until last fall was a regular attendant of the Worden Class at the Universalist Sunday School.

She leaves one daughter, Mrs. C. B. Harris; one son, Frederick C. Milligan, and three grandchildren, Ralph A. Milligan and Donald W. and Audrey P. Harris.

The funeral will take place from the home at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Burial will be private, in Riverside Cemetery."
