Family Graves Current Research Portland Irish History St. Dominic's RC Church Medieval Origins Links Misc.
I'm researching my family's direct maternal line, which includes Burke, Greely/Grealy, Cunningham, Riley/Reily, Welch, Stanton/Staunton,etc. and allied families. Co. Galway, Ireland to Portland, Maine USA.
The purpose of this site is not necessarily about publishing a genealogy, but rather to share ancestral information in hopes of collaborating with others who also research these Portland Irish families. There were many immigrants of these surnames that departed County Galway to settle in the city beginning in the 1840's (famine years) right up through the early 1900's. Often, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and generations of family followed. By investigating and extracting pertinent information from source records on this side of the Atlantic Ocean, I'm hopeful to connect these families together and discover more about their origins in the old country.
Michael Burke and Bridget I. Greely were born in County Galway, Ireland. They immigrated to the United States in the early 1850's and settled down in Portland, Maine. In 1857, they joined hands in marriage at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church. They had ten children.
Michael was employed with the Grand Trunk Railroad and the Portland Company on Fore Street. In 1860, Michael purchased a 2-family house on Adams Street from the Portland Company*.
