Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit at Zook's corner
Aldus Miller, Seventy-seven, Lancaster, R5 is Road's Initial victim the first fatal accident on the reconstructed portion of new Holland Pike, caused the death of a 77-year-old pedestrian who was struck by an auto while crossing the highway at Zook's Corner at 4:35pm Monday.
The pedestrian, Aldus H. Miller, lancaster R5, died in the operating room at Lancaster General hospital as surgeons were attempting to save his life. Hospital authorities placed the time of death at 6:10pm Monday, less than two hours after he was struck.
Pvt. Kenneth Owens of the State Police said Joseph McCurdy, twenty-four, Oakdale R1, Allegheny County, was released on hius own recognizance following the accident. Police said McCurdy, a Pennsylvania Powere and Light Co. worker, was enroute home when his vehicle struck the man.
Dr. Charles P. Stahr, deputy coroner, said death probably was caused by compund fractures of both lower legs and an injured left chest. He also suffered a laceration above the right eye, a lacerated chin and multiple abrasions.
The accident, police said, was the first reported since local traffic began to use the rebuilt section of the New Holland Pike. The highway has not yet been officially opened to traffic and detour signs remain at both ends of the new stretch of concrete, police said.
Pvt Owens, who was assisted in the investigation by Pvt Sebestian Nagle, said he learned McCurdy was traveling toward the city when the accident happened. Miller, a retired laboratory worker at the Armstrong Cork Co. was crossing Route 23 at Zook's Corner just North of Eden, and was in the South-bound traffic lane when he was hit.
Police said the man was delivering newspapers at the time.
The force of the collision, police said, threw Miller about 30 feet. Residents in the area summoned city and state police and also called the Lancaster General Hospital. Patrolman Andrew Kauffman of the city police was sent to the scene in the city ambulance, but noting the serious nature of the man's injuries, decided to wait for physicians to remove him to the hospital.
Miller was taken to the hospital in the hospital ambulance. He was given emergency treatment in the receiving ward and then rushed to the operating room where he died.
He was born in Lampeter township, a son of the late John and Mary Zittle Miller and on Nov. 14, 1944 had celebrated his 50th Wedding Anniverary. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Minnie K. Weaver Miller, and these children: Ida W., wife of Fred J. Daum, and mable W., wife of Guy A. Neel both of Lancaster R5.
