Welcome to the INDIA PHOTOS (
PAGE ONE)
Image "ship 1"
This image is from an old postcard which has the title" Troopship leaving Bombay harbour". The post stamp and much of the message on the reverse side of the card was is unfortunately obliterated .
The ships name is "PALITANA" . Many of the troops appear to be wearing kilts, and I think it possible that this is a WW1 image, but I would greatly welcome other opinions please.
The only legible writing on the reverse of this card is "To Miss M.B. ?? , Walsall, Staffs, England." and " Dear Mary, ?????? your loving brother, signature ????".
*Update November 25th. 1999* John Feltham kindly sent the following, "The SS Palitana was a "BI " (British India Steam Navigation Company) vessel. She was acquired or built by the BI in 1886. She was 2,998 gross tons and was disposed of by the BI in 1922.
A further update from John Feltham
which was received 18th August 2002, "The troops were embarking at Bombay for Durban during the Boer War."

Image "pwilliam"

"pwilliam" is from a post card that that has as its printed title "Port William" but this surely must be 'Fort William'. I believe the card was posted from BARIAN in 1930. It depicts the " ROYAL BARRACK, PORT ? WILLIAM" . On the reverse side, the addressee was "Miss J. TURNBULL, Dirgarve? , Abefeldy, Scotland." The message begins, " My Dear Sister, this is the Barrack we go to in Calcutta". The message ends, "From, R.T. (Barian)". If anyone can "claim" the TURNBULL's , I would be happy to send the original card to them. Contact Roger Capewell at :- militaryphotos@capefam.freeserve.co.uk
