Vowels

It is important to learn how to pronounce the Lakota vowels.
A = pronounced as in father

E = pronounced as in end

I = pronounced as in feel

O = pronounced as in oats

u = pronounced as in food

Nasal vowels

Most "n's" following a vowel is a nasal vowel. That means that the "n" is not pronounced as an "n" but the vowel is nasalized. The nasal vowel usually has a tail.  In this document they are represented in bold.

Other special sounds

Many Lakota dictionaries & books utilize a consonant with a dot over them (like  ż) to represent a  guttural or glottal stop.  In this publication we will show this in bold letter font.

"c" is always pronounced "ch".

"s" with a dot above "s" is pronounced as "sh".

"g" with a dot above "g" is pronounced as a guttural "g"

F, Q,R,V,X are not used in the Lakota language. All other letters sound the same as in English if they are not marked.
