Pop-up Pedigree

Cecila was born at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, USA, circa 1887. She was the daughter of Peter Livermont. She was a student at Holy Rosary Mission Boarding School, Pine Ridge, Shannon Co., South Dakota, USA, circa 1915. School: I attended school at Holy Rosary Mission in Pine Ridge. I started at the age of six and stayed there until I became sixteen. Holy Rosary was the only school I attended. About one hundred students were going to school there then. School started September first and lasted until June twenty-fifth. The girls and boys were separated for classes. The fathers taught the boys and the nuns taught the girls. We never ate with the boys. School lasted half a day. Every afternoon we had to work. The girls would sew, knit, work in the kitchen and in the laundry.
While I was at Holy Rosary, they encouraged us not to speak the Indian language but didn't succeed. In fact, that was where I learned to speak the language. All the other girls. spoke Lakota, so I wanted to learn, too.
I was six years old when the Wounded Knee Massacre happened. They had sent word for people to come to Holy Rosary and pick up the students because they were having a battle near the mission. My father and two brothers came and got us in a wagon. They put us in back and covered us with quilts. I remember peeking out from under the quilt and thinking it was exciting.
Before my father picked us up, I recall hearing people screaming and guns shooting. There were two priests standing in the belfry and looking out when a bullet came flying and went between them and hit the wall behind them. The bullet hole is still there, I believe.
There was a Day School on that flat ground towards the cemetery. Mrs. Wells taught school there. During this commotion, they burned her school down. I remember watching the blaze and seeing her carrying two children across the field..1
