Jacksboro, Texas Middlebrooks' Reunion
contact: lilwest@netcommander.com
The reunion will be on the second Saturday of June at the
Community Room of the First National Bank, 201 South
Main Street, Jacksboro, Texas. The gathering will begin
around 10:00 a.m. and last until?? There will be a covered
dish luncheon, business meeting, visitation, etc. A special
member of the clan is honored each year and sometimes
an auction is conducted to help defray expenses. All
Middlebrooks’ are welcome.
This reunion was originally established for the 42 first cousins
of John Floyd and Mary Jane (Jenny) Jarrell Middlebrooks in the
mid 1930s. John Floyd and Jenny were from Jones County,
Georgia and settled in Panola County, Texas in the 1870s. In
1880 they moved to the Jacksboro area of Jack County, Texas
where John Floyd secured a position driving a stagecoach that
carried mail, passengers, and freight. The route was between
Weatherford, Texas, via Fort Richardson in Jack County, and
Fort Still, Oklahoma. He and Mary Jane continued to farm and
eventually acquired 728 acres of land. John Floyd was known
for his diversified conservation practices and his wolfhounds,
which were matched between other rival hounds of the area.
Mary Jane was a schoolteacher in the community school.
There were six children and the oldest son, Joseph Anderson
reared his family in Panola County. Descendents are still living
in the area. The other five children raised their families in Jack
County, but most later scattered to other areas.
Three of the original 42 first cousins are living and continue to
attend the annual reunion, health permitting. Come and join us
this June.
We need an update for the next reunion as soon as possible.
