(1) 11 Dec 1813, in Edzell, Angus, Scotland,[2] Mary Lindsay #958, b. circa  1792, d. 1817, buried: 1817, Edzell, Angus, Scotland, m. (2) 5 Nov 1825, in Edzell, Angus, Scotland, Rebekah (Rebecca) Dorward #961, b. circa  1805, c. 21 Nov 1805, Lethnot and Navar, Angus, Scotland,[3] (daughter of Donald Dorward #970 and Janet Neilson #971) d. 1898,1  buried: Edzell, Angus, Scotland.  William died 1839, Edzell, Angus, Scotland, buried: Edzell, Angus, Scotland.  MFT says: “Glenesk Middletons: (Craigoshino Family) William Middleton who used to trade over the hills into Glenesk was known as Packie M. settled in the farm of Craigoshino, died in 1840 (80-90). But for the fact that his name was also William I would have believed him a son of A. M. Senr. in Birkenhill. He married Rebecca Dorward, died 1898.” Died age 60. (Note: Shown 2002 that William Middleton of Haughend, Glenesk, is not a son of A. M. Snr.) William Middleton of Craigoshino was described as a “Merchant in Dalscampyhy” Glenesk for the birth of his first 2 children. The link to Birse is uncertain.
Mary: This may be the Mary Lindsay, daughter of David Lindsay c. 20 Dec 1790, Edzell. A David Lindsay m. Margaret Wyllie 5 Jul 1783 Edzell. This Mary has a number of siblings. Mary probably died shortly after the birth of her second child James in 1816.
Rebekah: Name spelt Rebekah for her christening and marriage record and for some c. records of her children but Rebecca in others. 1841 census (35) & 1861 census: (55) at Craigoshino (Craig’s Shino). 1881 census: Farmers widow age 75 living at 3 Summer Bank Lane, Brechin. Also present in the house were grand-daughters Rebecca Jeffrey (U 28) (Mrs Baxter on MFT) and Ann Law Middleton (U 17), both factory workers born in Edzell. Note: Rebecca Dorward had a 10th child, George Middleton, b. 1848-49 father unknown.

May have died young. 1881 census: not found. Age would be 53. Note: an Elizabeth Middleton m. George Mitchell 3 Jun 1870, Brechin, Angus, Scotland, and they were living at Edzell castle on census night 1881 but the age of 52 for this Elizabeth indicates that she is probably the Elizabeth Middleton c. 17 Jul 1828, in Edzell, the daughter of John Middleton and Isobel Kidd.

                            vii          William Middleton #966 b. 17 Mar 1832,3  c. 16 Apr 1832, Edzell, Angus, Scotland,3  occupation: Teacher of Languages, d. 27 Nov 1907, Brechin, Angus, Scotland.[4]  MFT says: “William Middleton M.A. suc. his brother in Falkirk Academy, but having to resign he went to Brazil in business. Returned and taught pupils Spanish in Brechin, died 1910.” Single, no issue. Died at 14 Bank Street, Brechin (information supplied by Robin Kinloch). 1841 census: (9) with mother. 1881 census: (U 48) Retired Teacher. Boarder at 28 Abbotsford Place, Govan, Lanark, Scotland.

May 1832,3  c. 19 Aug 1832, Banchory-Ternan, Kincardine, Scotland,3  (daughter of David Allan #973 and Fanny Stallon #974) d. 2 Jun 1878,5  buried: Edzell, Angus, Scotland.5   David died 17 Jun 1878,5  buried: Edzell, Angus, Scotland.5   MFT says: “David Middleton [MA] L.L.D. H.M.I.S. son of Wm. M. by former marriage. Received a Portrait in oils from a circle of friends and admirers wh. is now in possession of his sister.” HM Senior Inspector of Schools. Elizabeth: An Elisabeth Duncan m. 30 Dec 1837, in Edzell, James Gold. In 1881 a James and Betsy Gold were living at Dryplaid Cottage, Fettercairn (with a grandson William Gibb Gold (14) born in Edzell) and a James and Elisabeth Gold were living at West Bridge End, Fettercairn. Both Betsy and Elisabeth were age 73 but neither were born in Edzell.
Rhoda: Marriage also recorded 10 Aug 1864, Logie, Perth, Scotland. No children identified.

The sponsor at the christening was John Duncan father of Elisabeth. 1881 census: (M 47) Tailor, living at 31 Hill Street, Montrose. Death certificate states: David Middleton, pauper of Montrose, formerly tailor, widower of Helen Leslie, died at the combination Poor House, Stonehaven, aged 66, son of David Middleton, schools inspector (deceased) and Elizabeth Middleton m.s. Duncan (deceased).
Helen: Died before David. Date not determined.

Marriage and children determined from IGI and 1881 census only. Note: 1881 census records a John McDiarmid Gamekeeper of Auchlyne, Killin, Perth, (U 23) b. Kenmore, Perth, Scotland and his sister Margaret McDiarmid (14) b. Balquihidder - birth dates fit this family but birth places do not agree.
Hugh: 1881 Census: (M 50) Gamekeeper Dam Lodge Blairadam, Cleish, Kinross, Scotland. Birth date and parents not determined.

Married David Baxter, Stone Mason at unknown date. Died at 50 Bridge Street, Brechin. Informant: cousin William Jaffrey of 73 River Street, Brechin. Marriage record not found. It is possible that Jean had other children between the date of her marriage and the birth of Ann in 1870-71 but they have not been found. Note: age of 53 in 1881 gives b. 1828! Age should be 47. Alternatively, this may be Jean Middleton b. 1824 of Burnside, daughter of John Middleton and Isobel Kidd who would be 57.
