Hendy

First Generation:

James (Born about 1748, possibly Arreton) = Rachel Riddett   (Maureen O'Sughrue)

From the IGI, James Hendy of Arreton (born about 1748) married Rachel Riddett at Carisbrooke 22.10.1776. This is presently the earliest record we have on James. He died aged 87 and was buried at Shalfleet, 15.7.1835. James’ and Rachel’s children follow in the second generation. Sources are from records held in the PRO Isle of Wight and the IGI. Dates in brackets are baptism dates.

Second Generation:

James (28.11.1778 Shalfleet)

James died aged 60 and was buried at the House of Industry, 15.2.1838.

Hannah and Daniel (3.6.1781 Shalfleet)

Hannah and Daniel are the first of two sets of twins. Daniel is also under ‘Handy’. Hannah possibly married Henry Bull, back of Whippingham at Newchurch, 6.4.1801.

Mary (25.12.1782 Shalfleet)

In the IGI Mary is referred to as Moley. She possibly married John Wheeler, Newchurch, 10.12.1814.

Rachel (10.3.1785 Shalfleet) (Yvonne Fountain)

Rachel is also under Handy in IGI. In church records 20.4.1806. record showing Jane Jolliffe born at Shalfleet - 'natural of Rachel Hendy'. This appears to be Rachel's illegitimate child to a Jolliffe. Rachel possibly married Henry Hodges of Calbourne at Shalfleet, 23.12.1808.

Sarah and John (27.6.1790 Shalfleet) (Colleen Kubis; Michael McManus; Eleanor Smyrski; Mary and Mike Horder; Karen Smith; Angela Niblett)

Sarah possibly married James Bessant, Newchurch, 1812. See James Bessant family, 1871 Census for West Cowes. John married Ann of Titchfield Hampshire. It is from John that the above named researchers came.

William (7.10.1792 Shalfleet)

In a list of paupers dated 1834, a William Hendy is living with John Drayton and three young children at Shalfleet. This is only possibly our William, because there is a three year difference in his age. It is also possible that William married Abigail Sergeant at Shalfleet in 1817. The 1841 Census shows William, Agricultural Labourer and Abigail living at Warlands Farm, Shalfleet with son Andrew, 11 years. In 1851 Census at Ningwood William, 69 married, Ag. Lab. is living at Eddy's with son Henry, unmarried, 32 a Bricklayer's Lab. Son Andrew was baptized at Shalfleet, 4.4.1830. Their first son was Henry, bap. Shalfleet 9.11.1817. In 1841 Henry was a male servant working for Peter Wheeler family, Yeoman, at Ningwood Dairy Farm. Second son was James, baptized 31.1.1819. at Shalfleet, believed to have died aged 11, buried 12.2.1831 in House of Industry.

Ruth (15.3.1795 Shalfleet)
