| Welcome to the LÖWENSTEIN
family |
 |
| The photo at the right, taken ca.
1917, is of the S.B.LÖWENSTEIN family. From left
to right: Max, Paula, Bertold, (father) Samuel
Benjamin Löwenstein, Wilhelmine "Mimi",
Anna and Paul. The father would die shortly (Dec.
11, 1917), Paul would die in World War I a year
later (Oct. 19, 1918) and his sister Anna would
tend to him as a military nurse and bring his
body home for a hero's burial. Absent from this
photo is the mother Julie (nee Kaufmann) who died
Jan. 10, 1908. The story of the Löwenstein
family is an interesting one. This family
originated in an area of Western Germany near the
Dutch border. They were patriots and experienced
many wars. The family home billeted troops and
even animals during the Napoleonic wars. Their
home-town of Bocholt is a
fortified city. The Löwenstein family became
prominent citizens in Bocholt but being Jewish at
the time of the NAZI regime meant tragedy for
them despite their accomplishments.
Their story should be an inspiration and a
caution to my children and others that our life
on this earth is not to be taken for granted and
in spite of all its tragedies there is always the
spirit to persevere and to leave for our children
a better world than we found.
