Sixth Generation
32. John Victor Ask NORQUIST,2,21 son of Johan ASK and Christina Lovisa WENDELIN, was born on 22 March 1857 in Mälby, Nora, Västmanland, Sweden,22 died on 15 May 1914 in Morton, Illinois 2 at age 57, and was buried in Mennonite Cemetery.
General Notes: John V. (Ask) Norquist, son of Johan and Kristina L. (Wendelen) Ask, was born March 22, 1857 at Geavala, Sweden, which was 15—20 miles from Gysinge, Sweden. John V. was the oldest of his two brothers, William and Ludwig. John V. married Anna Rodin, daughter of Olaf and Kristina Bergquist on May 6, 1878. Anna was born on April 14, 1858 at Ostra Pernabo (Parish) In Sweden. A son, John August was born to them on September 9, 1879.
John V. and wife, Anna, along with their son, John August, came to the U.S.A. in March of 1880. They located in Burlington, Iowa where Anna’s brother lived. Their address at that tine was 710 S. 12th. St., Burlington, Iowa. Later they moved to 401 S. Wood St. in Burlington. It was possibly near this time that John V. and his brothers William and Ludwig, had their name changed from Ask (by which they were known in Sweden), to Nordquist. Sometime later John V. removed the “d” frau, his name and used the name Norquist. The other brothers, William and Ludwig, retained the name Nordquist.
At the time John and Anna were living In Burlington, a young lady named Louise Berquist, and who was born in Sweden, came to visit and met John V.’s brother William. They later married and made their home in the area of Bishop Hill and Galva, Illinois. Later they made their home in Moline, Illinois. Brother Ludwig and his wife, Lizzie, lived in Chicago, Illinois. Arthur and his wife, Hilda, lived at Ryne, Iowa for a time and later at Moline, Illinois.
It was on August 12, 1887, that Jam V.’s wife, Anna, suffered a heat stroke and died, leaving the four children, John, Carl, Arthur, and Alice. Their ages were approximately three through nine. The children were put into the homes of relatives. John V.’s brother, William, and his wife, Louise, took Carl to live with them for a time. Brothers John and Arthur, and possibly Alice, were taken by the Hedlund cousins who lived in the Bishop Hill and Galva areas in Illinois. Carl was six years old at this time. When the boys were 12 and 14 years of ages they were placed in an orphanage, along with sister Alice. The orphanage was near Peoria, Illinois.
Sometime later, Dan Wagler, who lived on a farm near Pekin, Illinois, needed boys for help on the farm. He went to the orphanage and was able to arrange for Carl to leave the orphanage, and to live on the Wagler farm as a farmhand. The Waglers learned to like Carl so well, that they went back to the orphanage and got John to also come live with them as a farmhand. (It is uncertain if brother Arthur was taken to the orphanage, or if he stayed with the Hedlund cousins in Galva and Bishop Hill areas). Sister Alice was taken from the orphanage by a minister and his wife, who later adopted her. When John and Carl were older, they were determined to find their sister Alice, and they were successful in doing so. Alice’s foster parents were not too pleased at the time, however, things worked out that they were able to make occasional visits with Alice. Alice later married Mike Warn, who was a banker, and they made their home In St. Paul, Minn. They had no children.
In the year 1900 John V. enlisted in the U.S. army, serving three enlistments — two of which were in the Philippines. Following his retirement from government service, he made his home with his son, Carl and family, at Morton, Ill.
John V. usually helped with the farm chores. However, on May 15. 1914, he did not come to the barn as he usually did. He was later found dead in his bed — not a cover was moved. It is thought he suffered a stroke. His age was 57.
John had been faithful in his church attendance whenever possible. One of the remembrances the grandchildren have is how he would give each one a few corn candies to them before going to bed each evening.
John V. is buried in the cemetery beside the Groveland Evangelical Mennonite Church at Groveland, Illinois.

35. Lena BIRKEY, daughter of Andreas BIRKEY and Katie LITWILLER, was born on 2 April 1862 in Morton, Illinois and died on 8 November 1948 in Fort Wayne, Indiana at age 86.
General Notes:
Lena Birkey was born on April 2, 1862 at Morton, Illinois, the daughter of Andreas and Katie (Litwiller) Birkey.
Lena was married to Daniel Hochstettler on December 28, 1884. Daniel was born on November 12, 1859 at Morton, Illinois, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Ropp) Hochstettler. Lena and Daniel lived on the farm home south of Morton. (This was the farm home later occupied by Edwin and Edna Birkey).
Two daughters were born to this union. Rosina Hochstettier was born on September 27, 1885, and passed away at the age of 5 from burns she suffered after falling into a tub of boiling water as grandma Lena was washing. Katie Elizabeth Hochstettler was born July 27, 1887.
Lena and Daniel were only privileged to enjoy seven years of marriage as Daniel died on June 14, 1892 of tuberculosis. He was then 33 years of age.
Following Daniel’s death, Lena and daughter Katie moved to the farm home of Lena’s sister and brother-in-law, Mike and Katie Ramseyer which was a mile south of Morton, Illinois.
They attended the Groveland Missionary Church in Groveland, Illinois. where Lena became a charter member. It was there that Katie became acquainted with Carl Norquist, who attended with the Wagler family.
In the fall of 1903 the Missionary Church decided to have a school to train young people for missionary service. On January of 1904, Lena Hochstettler and Katie, who was then 17 years of age, went to Bluffton, Ohio to the Bethany Home. There were 34 young people present for the opening days, and Katie was privileged to be in that group. April 14th closed the season. Lena Hochstettler was a cook there.
Since Bluffton was a small town with Limited railroad facilities, it was decided to look elsewhere for the future home of the Bible School. Ft. Wayne was chosen to be the new home. Five acres were purchased in July of 1904. The building began on September 16, 1904, and was ready for occupancy on January 25. 1905. Katie Hochstettler and Carl Norquist were among the first students during the season of January 3 to May 12, 1905. Lena Hochstettler was one of the cooks at that time. Carl helped install the seats in the chapel.
Lena Hochstettler had 80 acres of land given to her by her father, which was across the road from Mike and Katie Ramseyer. Lena had Maths Lumber Company of Morton put up a house and buildings, and this was to be the home of Carl and Katie following their marriage which took place on August 9, 1906 in Morton, Ill. They Lived together with Lena on the farm. Carl did the farming.
Lena experienced another sorrow in her life when daughter, Katie, died on April 27, 1916 at the age of 28 years. She left four children, Alice, Ina, Lena and Melvin. Their ages were from eleven weeks to nine years. Lena told her son-in-Law, Carl, that as long as the good Lord would give her strength1 she would help to keep the family together and this she did, for which each of the children are grateful. (More detail is given on another page concerning Katie’s illness and death.)
It was three years later that Carl was married to Barbara Eisele, and Lena was able, a little later, to move to the farm home of her brother Amos, and keep house for him. After several years Lena and Amos moved to 204 North Main Street in Morton, Illinois. When Amos died, Lena’s granddaughter, Lena Norquist, went to live with her and to help care for her. In June of 194 Lena Hochstetttler also graciously opened her home to grandson Melvin and his wife, Dorothy, where they lived together for a year or two following their wedding.
Each of the grandchildren shares memories of grandmother Hochstettler’s life and teaching. Melvin remembers vividly the special box on grandmother’s dresser which, as she warned the grandchildren, was never to be touched as it contained her tithes she had “set aside” for the Lord. This has been a great memory for each of the grandchildren.
The last seven years of Lena’s life were spent with her daughter Alice in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. She passed away on November 8, 1948. She had labored so faithfully and was greatly missed by all.
Noted events in her life were:
• Occupation: Homemaker.

General Notes:
Peter B. Nafziger was born at Petersburg, Illinois January 1, 1863 to Peter E. and Barbara (Garber) Nafziger. On February 5, 1889 he was married to Magdalene Naffziger at Washington, Illinois. A year later they moved to Anchor, Illinois where Peter B. resided for the remainder of his years. His occupation was that of farming.
Peter B. and Lena were the parents of four children: Arthur, Elsie (Mrs. Samuel Ummel), Ethel, and Vera.
The grandchildren of Samuel and Elsie, remember these grandparents as always being loving and kind. They were always ready to be of help when the family had a need. The Anchor Mennonite Church was just a short distance from Grandpa and Grandma’s farm home and it was at this country church that Rev. Samuel Ummel had his first pastorate. The grandchildren recall the many times they would stop at their grandparent’s home on the way home from church and eat dinner with them. The country school, which the grandchildren attended, was also near Grandpa and Grandma’s home.
It was around 1918 that Grandmother Lena started to experience ill health. She was strickenen with a form of chronic rheumatism, and which later was accompanied with a complication of diseases. For the last eighteen months of her life she was bedfast with constant suffering. She bore all her suffering with much patience, Christian strength, and fortitude. Everything was done that kind and loving hands could do to minister to her relief. However, the Father above, to whom she was always ready to submit her will, saw otherwise. It was soon after being admitted to the Brokaw Hospital in Bloomington, Illinois that she was called home to rest in God’s eternal presence on August 17, 1921.
It was just one year prior to Lena’s passing that son Arthur, who was stationed in the military, passed away at Greenville, S. C. The date was March 12, 1920. His death was caused by bronchial asthma and valvular heart trouble. Arthur had been a dutiful son and a kind and loving brother. He had made a decision at the age of 10 to unite with the members of the Anchor Mennonite Church and to assume Christian responsibilities.
A daughter, Vera, who was born May 5, 1905, was crippled from birth and passed away in 1922. It was during these months that Ethel faithfully stayed in the home caring for her aged parents, and invalid sister, Vera.
Grandfather Peter B. Nafziger passed away on April 11, 1940. His funeral was held at the Anchor United Brethren Church with the Rev. George Gundy and Rev. Roy Unzicker officiating.
Following the death of Peter B. Nafziger, Ethel moved to California. She was employed as a baker for Bakery and Confectionary of North Hollywood, California. While in California she met and married Merlin Wiggins. He died in 1968. Soon after that Aunt Ethel moved to Morton, Illinois. It was in April of 1969 that Rev. Ummel went to be with the Lord, and Aunt Ethel was a great help and encouragement to her sister, Elsie Ummel.
The family of Peter B. and Lena will always be mindful that: “The mercies of the Lord are from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.” (Ps. 103:17.)

She attended school and grew to womanhood near Peru, Ill. In the year 1881 she was united in marriage to Frank Holler of Peru. This union was blessed by the birth of four children, two boys and two girls. Twenty two years ago they left their farm in Illinois and moved to a farm near Taopi, Minn. Mrs. Holler is survived by her two sons, Irvin of Kasbeer, Ill., and Walter of Austin, by her two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Watts of Rockford, Ill. and Mrs. Jessie Sale of Austin, by her 23 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and many friends and neighbors.
