Fosters Meadow Cemetery

It is unknown at the present time where this cemetery is actually located. In a memo dated February 14, 1737, it states that it is in Fosters Meadow, in the Township of Hempstead, in Queens County, on the Island of Nassau in the Colony of New York. Fosters Meadow was an early name for what is now known as Valley Stream, in what was formally Queens County. This information was obtained from the Long Island room files in the Jamaica Public Library

Information contributed recently from a fellow researcher states that this cemetery became Elmont Cemetery.
The info is as follows:

Fosters Meadow Cemetery was renamed Elmont Cemetery in the early 20th century and is located on Elmont Road in Elmont. The cemetery is now maintained by Beth David Cemetery. Occupannts are primarily from the early Dutch and English settlers of the area.

And then:
Richard A. Winsche, The History of Nassau County Place-Names...(Interlaken, NY:1999), p 30,31 discusses the vote in 1882 to change the name of the village from Fosters Meadow to Elmont. Both names were used for the area and the cemetery well into the 20th century. The sign on the cemetery states Elmont Cemetery and is sometimes referred to as the Old Elmont Cemetery.

In addition:
Fosters Meadow was the area in the Towns of Hempstead and Jamaica that included present day Elmont, Rosedale, Laurelton and No. Valley Stream. Parts of Springfield (Gardens) , St Albans and Valley Stream were sometimes refered to as FM in the early to mid 1800's, tho technically not part of FM. After the adoption of the Elmont name, both names were used interchangeably for some time. Rosedale continued to be referred to as FM until around 1915.
